We are looking at buying a new (to us) Lance. It has both a Garmin 430W and 530W. We have been told that we need to have subscriptions for BOTH for updates. I have heard of others using the month old data in the 430 and updating the 530 with the fresh monthly info (paying for just one subscription). I was told that if the two units have different info, it can cause a problem. Will I be able to pull out the month old card from the 530 and put it in the 430? Does anybody have experience with this same issue? What does everyone else do?

It isn't a legal necessity (other than for an IR practical test), but it makes life a lot easier.

It will prevent crossfeeding the flight data between units, so you have to load everything twice including all route changes enroute.

Yes, you can, but you'll have the abovementioned difficulties.

I've had IR trainees try that, but they always get frustrated and then order the second subscription (which comes at a discount, IIRC).

Its nice having both units on the same update per the reasons above. Our Pipers have two 430 units.

However, I'd just go with the 530 current and 430 old data like you are saying. The likely hood of the one of the units going belly up is low. I haven't had a 430 unit go bad on me in five years. The 430 will still get you home minus the 28 Day Cycle approach legality.

Certainly seems like overkill to have both updated every 28 days (and to have ipad showing same / if not better). I couldn't find the price for a combo for the downloads. I tried to get the info from Garmin's site, but it would not load for some reason.

I get them both.usually can get a good discount on price,at sun n fun or OSH.

I don't recommend or encourage flying with an outdated database, but there's no "approach legality" issue with an expired database as long as the approach hasn't changed since the database expired (check the update date in the bottom left corner of the approach chart) and you're not doing an IR practical test.

I always kept both of my updated at the same time, it's not twice as much for the subscription, maybe 1 1/2 times as much as a single sub. :D
I did have a single 530W for a while in one airplane and I would update it and use the old card in the other airplane with a 430W, so it was a month behind.:D

So they sell them at 5 times what they're actually worth instead of 10 times? :goofy:

Question, are the 430 and 530 databases identical? i.e. if you had a subscription could you update each one every other month?

Yes. Identical.

If they are identical, what would stop someone from making two copies of the database on two separate cards and just sticking them in the 430 and 530? I found the Jeppson site. One copy cost $350. Two copies costs $530. Of course I couldn't find that info until I had made an account and added them to my shopping cart.

Yep, your correct! I forgot about checking the update date. I remember my old CFI telling me that when I had approach binder that expired the day before.

I imagine Jepp/Garmin thought of that in their programming. Since the benefit of two subscriptions is that the two machines can cross-talk to each other, they would likely verify that there are two valid subscriptions (e.g., not having the same serial no. as two identical dupes would) when the machines talk to each other.

Further, the affiant sayeth naught... (i.e., "That's all I have to say about that..." don't get me started about data subscriptions.)
