Stupid Mistake. Back to basics.

More proof that the track up guys...
Reading 6PC's post, my interpretation is that he put up the airport diagram (the one that looks like the paper diagram) and that's what caused the confusion. You can't put the airport diagram track up.

Did the same thing one time. Cleared to land on 13 but I had loaded in 31 Approach in the GPS. I called the tower to make sure I was landing on the correct runway.

Which is my point. Track up people seem to have trouble reading charts the way charts should be orientated. Their brain operates at a lower level. Dumb things down, and the person gets dumber.

"Should be" is a matter of personal preference. Some airplanes don't have a choice of north up on the display. This is especially true with airplanes that display radar (real radar, not uplink).

I find it MUCH easier to use the heading bug if there is one.

Put it on runway heading, then line it up with the appropriate marker. Top for a straight in, bottom for downwind entry, etc.

It's real helpful for older airports with a lot of runways. KSAC is real easy if you've done it before (Tower almost always calls 20), but it confuses first timers.

Understanding the airport diagram is real important, but it's not something I like to stare at approaching the pattern.

It happens.

Nope. Never. Never ever. Ever ever ever!
Not to me, seriously, never. I have never made a silly mistake like that! NEVER!

I think my attempt to block it out of my memory works pretty well, I do not recall ever making a mistake like that at KTYR. Never. Ever. ;)

I believe I need to find a way to pull and shred the tape from Nov XXth 20XX xxxxZ and then I can really claim it never happened. :D

How many charts are printed track up? ;)

Oops.

Heck just look at your sectional, keep the sectional track up, look at your compass to verify runway heading.

Didn't even need batteries for that one ;)

Live and learn, no biggie.

Way back when, I was taught to turn the paper VFR charts around to track up. You can read the writing upside-down. That's also how I read maps while mapping, both as the pilot and as the camera operator.

If there's a pilot here who has never done that raise your hand.

I've never lined up for the wrong runway... yet. I have turned the wrong way on an intersection departure. I fixed that mistake pretty quickly.

Yep, I started doing that on boats way back so what I saw on radar was coordinated with the chart.

Lined up for the wrong runway?
Happens to everyone.
Lesson learned? Move on, and keep on having fun.

I did. And I've never lined up for the wrong runway.
