I saw this first this morning on the National news and they said it was in France. Then I saw it on the local DFW news and it was at the Lancaster airport KLNC, South East of the DFW Bravo.

You know how the news people can be when it comes to anything aviation related. They said that the pilot had a special FAA permit for doing "stunts" at this airport during daylight hours.

The first time I saw it, I thought that it was someone filming the person on the four wheeler without realizing that a plane might come by. As I heard more and watched it a few times, it appears that it might have been staged by the air show people, since there was smoke and such low, high speed flying. If it had been a for real avoidance maneuver, it appears that the plane had adequate speed to just go over the guy. Also, the fact that he/she was making smoke at the same time, makes me curious.

There is speculation that it was made to promote their air show.

When the local news people made a stink with the City of Lancaster people, they simply referred them to the FAA. I thought that this was a wise move since city government people I've dealt with seem to have trouble telling the difference between an airplane and a pick up truck.

Re: "Stunt" Plane Almost Hits Idiot?

It seems he was closer to clipping a wing (7 seconds) on the ground than hitting the fool on the runway. I would suspect it was publicity and cleared by someone or how else did the guy on the ATV get on the runway without security being aware, and now the airport is in CYA mode.

Re: "Stunt" Plane Almost Hits Idiot?

And he came far closer to hitting the fool with the camera than the fool on the runway

Re: "Stunt" Plane Almost Hits Idiot?

I am not sure I would have had the courage to be the cameraman.

Re: "Stunt" Plane Almost Hits Idiot?

There was a post on the Redboard that included the investigation of the stunt company and just exactly which Pitts this was.

Typical stunt junk. It's the least interesting kind of act that shows up at airshows in my opinion. The bozos doing one of the car vs. airplane stunts at airventure almost nailed a 172 on taxiway Papa during one of their practice runs.

Re: "Stunt" Plane Almost Hits Idiot?

What sort of wavier would he have?

Re: "Stunt" Plane Almost Hits Idiot?

Well, airshow pilots gotta practice. This was a marketing stunt and he got way close, but airshow pilots need to practice ribbon cuts, trucktop landings, plane/car transfers and all the other stuff that folks would otherwise call "reckless" operation. And you can't just practice this stuff during actual airshows. This is part of an act Jason Newburg and Viper Airshows has going.

Re: "Stunt" Plane Almost Hits Idiot?

Practice as long as the airport is closed and other precautions are taken not to endanger others. Obviously we can't tell here. I can tell you that the clowns practicing the cobra stunt after the official airshow at Oshkosh year before last shot out of the west ramp across taxiway Papa which had been opened for aircraft movements. He just missed a 172 who was coming southbound towards that intersection.

I guarantee you the airshow guys have aerobatic boxes setup for their low-level practice. They aren't going to risk their airshow careers by getting busted for illegal ops. I don't know all the facts related to this video, but these guys know the rules very well. Jason Newburg isn't just some wannabe hotshot who just got a hot airplane and is playing newbie airshow hero. He's been around and he's got serious aerobatic skills along with an unlimited low-level waiver...not that getting a waiver has a whole lot do do with skill, but you do have to go through a process with an official ACE (aerobatic competency evaluator) and demonstrate that you know the rules and have the ability to fly your intended sequence at the altitudes consistent with your waiver level.

That being said, from a pure risk standpoint, I think what he did here was cutting it too close. But that's a different issue from those who may be concerned about the "legality" of what he did. The guys on the ground are part of his act...not just innocent by-standers that he decided to buzz. That means they willingly accept the risk along with the pilot. If they don't like how close he got, then they can get him to back off, or they can quit.

Re: "Stunt" Plane Almost Hits Idiot?

I don't know who it was in the plane, quad, or camera but if anyone had gotten hurt or killed, Lancaster would have been sued into next year and beyond.

Re: "Stunt" Plane Almost Hits Idiot?

Jason is a good pilot with a good reputation. This just got a little too close for comfort. He has an airshow waiver I know that. Lets just hope the airport he was practicing at was waivered at the time.

This is an airshow "act" that he has done before. The camera person just happened to be standing in the wrong spot.

I reiterate - sued... By the heirs, into oblivion.

From the other shots that were in the morning news video, it was definitely at KLNC.

Re: "Stunt" Plane Almost Hits Idiot?

On the local news this morning, they interviewed the Lancaster City Manager who said that it was being referred to the FAA. The way she said it led me to believe that she had no interest in getting in the middle of it.

Yeah, heard some of that. She would change that tune asap if the lawyers were in her face with a tort and depos.

I would have to take a break for underwear change after that if I was the camera man:eek:

Re: "Stunt" Plane Almost Hits Idiot?

News is reporting his aerobatic wavier expired in Nov 2012.

FAA is investigating activities last week.

Oops.

Re: "Stunt" Plane Almost Hits Idiot?

I can't understand the drision towards aviation activities undertaken by consenting adults. You people need to open your minds and find acceptance in your hearts.

Funny how pilots complain of ignorant news reporting and here we have a pilot spreading it. I can gather that you know nothing about waivers. His personal ICAS low-level waiver was issued Nov 2012 and expires December 2013. This is public information. This allows him to fly low-level aerobatics in waivered airspace at airshows only. Their personal ICAS waiver does not apply when they are practicing on their own. This is different from an FAA waivered aerobatic practice box that anyone can fly in as long as they read and sign the waiver. This is what airshow pilots use to practice their routines. So which one is being possibly misreported by this "news" establishment?

These practice boxes are usually good for two years and simply need to be renewed with the FAA. The local FSDO issues these waivers and ATC keeps these on file for reference, since they are responsible for notifying pilots who are flying IFR, or receiving flight following in the vicinity of the aerobatic box (when activated). You must call ATC to activate it and close it. These practice boxes are also NOTAM'd. It's not hard to resubmit for a practice box, so it's hard to imagine someone continuing to try to use it if it's no longer valid. It is not in ATC's interest to "activate" an expired box just the "owner" of the box asked. That's why they keep a copy of the waiver itself. I'm skeptical of the facts regarding some "news" agency's reporting of matters such as this.

This is between the pilot and potentially the FAA. Most of you don't seem to be informed enough about the legalities of airshow and aerobatic operation to be making judgments on legality alone. So let it be. You can keep arguing all day about who "dangerous" you thought this was. And you might want to cover your eyes during certain acts at some airshows too. ;)

Thread should read "Idiot almost hits Photographer"..... :nono:

But, I wonder if he was using a lens that made it look closer than it actually was? Or a tripod?

Sorry. Mea culpa. You may call me some nasty names, and flog me publicly for a while.

The camera guy was part of the crew and this was a planned stunt.

I don't see anything wrong with it. I used to fly over people with my dirtbike. (closed course, professional rider, do not try this at home) Probably worse to get nailed by a pitts though.

There is an entire industry of people who do stunts like airshow flying, base jumping and wing walking. As long as they are not putting the public in danger, who cares.

Both on the ground are on the inside of the plane's turn arc, safe enough for aircraft stunt work, performed by pilots and people that are willingly involved and adequately trained.

Well, they just featured this on Inside Edition. They are saying the waiver expired in November and he is now under FAA investigation.
