I'm going through training for my PPL (only 8 hours so far) and will be in Phoenix, AZ next week for about 6 days. I want to take a flight and do something cool.

I've looked online and saw the aerobatics flights and dogfight experiences at Fighter Combat International which I'm considering but I'm looking for recommendations from you guys.

Any feedback would be great!

James

Grab a CFI and fly over the Grand Canyon or if you want something closer, fly to Sedona for lunch/dinner.

I'd take you up, but my plane's in the shop...

Which airport will you be nearest?

+1
If you want to do a long day trip with a lot of Scenic views, fly to Bryce Canyon and / or Monument Valley after flying over the Gran Canyon.

We did such a tour from Deer Valley airport once:

Have fun!

Thanks for the replies. I will be staying in Ahwatukee so Chandler, Scottsdale, Sky Harbor, etc are all nearby. Any recommendations on who to call to setup a CFI for a flight?

Chandler will probably be closest and most reasonable.

Just get hooked up with a flight school in the area and tell them what you want to do, reserve an instructor to go with you for basically just a joy ride, they should be happy to do it!

We rented from Westwind at Deer Valley a few years ago and were very happy:

Deer Valley has become the world's busiest GA airport with a lot of (Asian) student pilots. Since you'll be going with a CFI, this should however not be an issue.

I recorded ATC back then:

It's an issue when you're sitting in a long line of student pilots waiting to take off, and paying for Hobbs and instructor time. That's what drove me to switch to Glendale when I visit the Phoenix area.

Sometimes, if they know you're not an "instructional" flight, they'll let you skip the line...
