Strong Solar Flares Headed Here

Harness the power of solar flares!
Heat and Cool your home for free.
Use the sun's power to make electricity for your entire home! Store power you capture for up to a year.

(now, rig up a small, cheap 'solar flare device' to sell on ebay, wait for the $ to pour in!)

I think you may have something there! You could at least get a government loan for $20,000,000 US Tax dollars to study it and come up with a device that no one wants then go BK to avoid paying it back!

No need to run, just wait for nightfall!

I have seen northern lights in Nebraska 15 years ago. Skys are looking clear for his weekend. Hopefully! :D

First time I saw them was in Long Beach, CA in the 70's, or was that chemically induced?
;)

I have tin hats for sale, send all your money :) you won't need it.

Looks like it's supposed to hit at 5am EST tomorrow.

Whew!

We could have been in big trouble if it had happened while the sun was out! ;)

It is interesting to me that the Sun, a dying star, gowing closer to the earth as it dies, consuming 700,000,000 tons of hydrogen per second, being only 8 light minutes away is spewing particles at us that are headed here at 8 million miles per hour, and we have been lead to believe we control the tempurature climate on earth.:rofl::rofl::rofl:

I saw a bunch of e-mails that HF transmissions
across the Atlantic were impossible yesterday.

It is mind boggling to me to attempt to understand the amount of energy the sun puts out.

The Sun's power (about 386 billion billion megaWatts) is produced by nuclear fusion reactions. Each second about 700,000,000 tons of hydrogen are converted to about 695,000,000 tons of helium and 5,000,000 tons (=3.86e33 ergs) of energy in the form of gamma rays. As it travels out toward the surface, the energy is continuously absorbed and re-emitted at lower and lower temperatures so that by the time it reaches the surface, it is primarily visible light. For the last 20% of the way to the surface the energy is carried more by convection than by radiation.

This is a minor solar flare event. Can you imagine if the sun burps? We would be like a burning mashmellow hurtling through space.

are airliners taking precautionary measures? or is it no big deal?

Didn't experience and equipment failures this am, but everyone sure was cranky!

There comes a point where measurement is pointless.

I wonder... I think I'm going to claim the sun and send everyone their billion year heating bill.

They have just revised the strength of the solar storm to a 50 year event instead of a 5 year event. Whats a little gamma radiation gonna hurt.

Wouldn't it be ironic if scientists discoved that C02 is responsible for protecting us from gamma radiation and therefore we need more of it? Fire up your SUV's and chain saws! Breath heavy! ;)

My local news talk radio, that I keep on during the day for my dog so he won't bark at every little noise he hears outside my apartment while I'm gone, had a mention of this today.

They are a "CBS" station and they mentioned GPS's and other devices - they said something like "hey if any of your stuff isn't working right today it could be due to the solar flare".

By the way, I know someone here posted when it STARTED, but when will it be DONE?

I am flying tomorrow morning, and I can use maps / pilotage, but my GPS will help me a lot.

Shouldn't be an issue tomorrow, unless orbiting equipment was damaged.

By the way, the sunspot complex that produced these flares and CMEs is visible with the naked eye. If you can find an appropriate solar filter, you can see it at about the 12 to one o'clock position. It's pretty small, but it's there. Note: sunglasses are not good solar filters.

Quick! Everyone look directly into the sun!

Reef those solar sails, boys, thar's gonna be a blow....

I looked at it through my welding shield. Yes, you can see it! That is a heck of a storm to be seen 93,000,000 million miles away. :yikes:
