I like Windy.com for this, too. But if you don't turn off the sound slider in the lower right, you will wonder where the arcing is coming from inside your laptop....
 
Can someone explain to me why one would ‘track lightning strikes’ outside of how it would impact your flight, or storm chasing type stuff or maybe for photography?

It gives good visibility to where strong convective activity and nasty storms are.

Right, so for flight planning, gotcha.

I use it for camping and other outdoor activities as well.

Install the free Windy app and take a look at the radar page. (and others)

It really is a striking interface.
 
I live on an airpark in the AZ boondocks. Knowing the intensity of the lightning strikes will let me know how bad the local storms are.
 
Foreflight shows lightning for the USA and some other countries. I don't know their data source, so I can't vouch for timeliness.
