I’ve come across one in the wild. I thought only C182s had CS props. Was this a factory option in the late 50s, or by STC. Inquiring minds…

STCs - hard to find or afford one now. You found a bit of a unicorn.

There is a 172 Hawk XP that Cessna made, but this was much later, in the '70s. Anything before that was an STC.

I've seen 170s sullied the same way.

I flew a lot of hours in an STC'd first year 172 with a Franklin engine, high compression, 100 octane, and constant speed prop.

That engine was rated 215 HP, derated with a manifold pressure restriction to 180 HP. About 23 inches at most air temperatures

At full gross, 100 mph and 1000 fpm average to 10,000 feet. Up there, RPM to 2,000 or less, full throttle, leaned, and GPH went down low, and cruise was economical.

At lower altitudes, it would cruise in the lower end of the yellow arc with legal power settings, but a high fuel consumption.

A great plane if you were flying at 10 to 12 thousand feet cross country, as I was.

What engine does it have? If it’s an O-360 with a constant speed, it’s a great package.
yes I have friend with one of these (via STC) is a great airplane.

175's came had constant speed props from the factory, I think for only 1 year.

Not sure. I’d have to contact the owner. He’s selling his 1/3 interest in the plane for a reasonable amount, but I’m not in a position to take advantage.

My 175 has an STC O-360 and CS prop. Between those and the STOL kit, I can get in and out of practically any runway.

The AVCON conversion was done in the early 70’s with Lycoming O 360 and CSP. Prior to 1968 models required a bump in the cowling(Continental engines). I’ve had a 68 model conversion for 30 years. Be sure one has aux tanks since your fuel burn will be 10gph. The nose will be heavier due to csp, but otherwise it is a great plane. The folks in Wellington KS put the 180hp in 172’s, but no CSP, they do not feel it is worth the switch. Those going in and out of short/high density strips think differently. I get 145 mph/125kts at 23/23 at 6 thousand burning 9 1/2 gph.
