Let's say someone were to purchase an S-LSA plane, and it was in conformance to it's original certificate. Then, they wanted to add something like right side brakes, or an aux fuel tank, or something that wasn't offered on the base aircraft. It would not change the flight parameters to put it outside of the LSA, like a variable pitch prop, but it would be a nice mod to have.

How does one go about it? The certification rules for S-LSA are different and something that is not a TSO type mod like a standard radio package would need an STC? Or is it a logbook entry and 337, or what?

Edit: I should qualify, that I'm not talking about a legacy plane like Taylorcraft, or Luscombe, but one of the modern ones.

Need to consult the mfr - but what I've seen is that you immediately convert to e-lsa and then any lsa repair,an can make the modifications provided the mfr approves. Cubcrafters does this even to put bushwheels on I believe.

That doesn't help. The plane is an S-LSA and needs to stay registered that way. How about the case where the mfg is defunct?

That's one of the big differences between a E-HB that meets LSA and a S-LSA. The E-HB (aka E-LSA in some cases) would need the current owner's log-book entry for minor changes and a new fly-off if major modification. But a S-LSA needs the mfr approval.

I hope someone has an answer that shows it can be done.

For an S-LSA you need a Letter of Authorization from the manufacturer. An example is attached.

I understand there is a work-around in the regulation in the event that the manufacturer is out of business.

Reports at SPT forum vary. Some say that their manufacturers are quite willing to issue LoAs, others not so much. It depends on how much the maker is afraid of litigation. Supposedly Remos is reluctant, while Evektor is promiscous with LoA. Keep in mind that LoAs cost money. Reportedly CZAW asks $8k for a LoA for canopy repair.
