If I can get a little extra time off of work around Oshkosh, I have been thinking of making a more circular route to and from Oshkosh to do some state hopping instead of the usual direct route. There would be limited time to spend in each state, so I thought I would pick just one airport/city to visit in each state each day. I am attaching a map showing the general idea of what I have in mind.

So, what do you consider are the must see aerial sights in these states? If you could only pick one airport in each state to stop, refuel, eat, see some sights and spend the night, which one would it be and why? It would be neat to see some aviation museums or historical sights, but I'm certainly open to any suggestions. No class 'B' and preferably no class 'C' airports.

I should also say I'm focusing on the states that are not colored in on my signature map, not the states surrounding Georgia. I'm just looking for two or three good layover locations going to and coming from Oshkosh. On another forum KMGY has been recommended in Dayton which sounds good to me. I'm thinking on the trip home I could fly around the water front area on the east side of Chicago and over to Dayton for the first day. I'm thinking the Shenandoah Valley area of Virginia would be good for the second day. Any airport suggestions for this area? From there back home with only a fuel stop along the way.

For the trip going to Oshkosh I was thinking of laying over around the St. Louis area and seeing if ATC would allow me an aerial 'Arch Tour'. Any suggestions for a layover between St. Louis and Oshkosh?

Thanks!

St Louis Downtown Parks. Just a quick run to Lacledes Landing where you have the full gambit of night clubs, restaurants, hotel and casino all right in a neat walking neighborhood, so you can party with no DUI to cab hassles if you want. You also have the Gateway Arch and Jefferson Expansion Museum in the base right there and the Old Cathedral a couple blocks away. Union Station shopping center and Forest Park with a world class zoo (free admission, great gift shop) and good-very good art museum that sometimes has excellent exhibitions from major masters. They are all a short cab ride away from Lacledes Landing, which I am pretty sure you can get between there and CPS by a train. For that matter you could use Lambert as well, same train, different end.

Thanks Henning! Good information. Any suggestions for a layover between St. Louis and Oshkosh?

Joplin has some historic interest points with Mark Twain and all, from there up to OSH I'm blank outside Wisconsin Dells.

The wife and I spent a night in Hannibal, MO a few years ago. A lot of interesting Mark Twain stuff.
