I know they have one for diesel engines, but can the red Sta-Bil fuel stabilizer be used in diesels?

Yes, not really needed though. Diesel is stable by itself for a year or more. The bigger issue is algae growth. A good diesel fuel conditioner will take care of that. ;)

The big issue with U.S. diesel is the SCAR rating. Many of the newer HPFP systems require a minimum rating that we don't consistently have. If you are talking about a diesel car/truck, I use an additive to increase the SCAR rating and an anti-gel in the winter.

I use Opti-lube but there are a number out there like Stanadyne, Power Service, etc. With the decreased lubricity because of the lower sulfur content in ULSD, I believe it helped improve my MPG and also gave me a bit better cetane rating.

You must have water in the diesel fuel before you can grow algae.

The Diesel Sta-bil does provide biocide. I would use a specific diesel product (either STA-BIL or one of the others mentioned).

How much water depends on just what kind of device we are talking about. A boat sure. Things that sit outside, perhaps, depends on where in the world you are.

Almost impossible to avoid, you really need to centrifuge all the fuel, dry the tanks and press them full, then have a desiccant trap in the vent line to get and keep the moisture out. Easier to just add some BioBor, or if you have the centrifuge, just keep the fuel polished.

And then there is walmart marine 2-stroke oil. Same effect on lubricity as PS.

It's a compact tractor stored in a pole barn in WI. It gets used once in a while in the winter.
