I liked the winds...

Last week the AWOS at KVLL was reporting winds as variable from 180 to 160. Since they always report the wind range clockwise when the direction is variable, I'm sure they meant in a 340 degree arc from 180 clockwise to 160. They weren't trivial winds either, they were 9G15KT. That's the first time I've ever seen significant winds reported as being that variable!

Last week I taxied for take off with the AWOS reporting a near direct cross wind. Got to the preffered runway and saw the windsock showing a direct tail wind. So I taxied around to the other end. Found the sock there also showed a direct tail wind, peered down the runway, saw that the first sock hadn't changed.

Shrugged my sholders and took off

It's been like that for years. Seriously. ;)

Last May there was this gem from nearby McMinnville, Oregon:

(In Portland, at least, it was calm all day, so this was doubtless an anomaly. Maybe a politician was passing through town. )
