What do you guys think of the merger of Spirit with Jet Blue? Spirit is in trouble and this guy thinks its combination of poor economy and increases in pilot salaries.

Pilot salaries are an easy cost to pass on to the customer. Spirit's issues are the grounding of 20 airplanes, and a drop in customers due to people getting tired of their poor product.

Just add a at the gate tax, I’m sure most people would pay it. Now your failing airline is profitable.

WSJ article a few days ago says that all airlines are now low-cost airlines, meaning that the biggest airlines have adopted the ways of the cheap upstarts, and that crowds out the likes if Spirit.

They are correct. The service levels of 30 years ago are 100% gone from US carriers. Leisure travellers buy solely on price, and that's where the competition for market share takes place.
