Spin Zone Opt-In?

A suggestion to the MC:

Perhaps we should consider defaulting the SZ to be excluded from searches, but enable people to opt in on their preferences. IIRC, we've had a number of people who felt somewhat driven away from PoA after spending time in the SZ. I hate to lose good people that way.

Opinions? Discussion?
I agree.

What I'm finding so far is that about all I can do without changes that won't update easily is to take Spin out of searches altogether.

Still researching though.

One thing we COULD do is password protect Spin Zone and put the password in the forum description.

If you never enter the password, I think what will happen is the forum will exclude it from searches. Enter the password once, and the forum will include it in searches, and then you'll have to choose to opt out from thence forward, I THINK.

Will run some tests on that today.

I belong to another forum which I think uses similar software.

There is a button for "New Posts (all)" and another one for "New Posts (av only)". I their case "av only" also eliminates their version of Hangar Talk as well as their version of SZ, but I'm sure it could be set up the way we want.

I understand the MC has its own forums set up. How do you folks have it set so those show only to the MC and not anyone else?

Oh duh. I'm an idjit.

Of course - we could set up a public group.

SZ would only be visible to members of the group. Joining the group would be voluntary.

Easiest thing in the world too. Sheesh why didn't I think of this before.

Next, how would you make the option available to others? Obviously, I cannot see the forums the MC uses. Other than your discussion of them in the past, I'd never know they exist.

On the PB, there is a forum that shows up but has a lock-like symbol on it. You have to request access. But, that could require more time on the MC's part.

Last, what about a rule requiring membership in the main forums for a period of time before being granted access to the Spin Zone? Thirty days, perhaps? This could cut down the chance of joining the whole group just to become a troll. That's rare but does happen.

It can also control access by some of those outlandish lawyers in Colorado. :D

I'm just throwing out ideas.

I think I can make it clear that the forum exists, but can't be read by those who don't join the group. I'll be updating descriptions to show how to gain access to the group.

Not going that route - no time to fiddle with a bunch of individual access masks.

IF it becomes a problem, we can restrict who can join the SZP group to validated users. IF - however. I'm not in the habit of fixing problems that don't exist, here. ;)

I appreciate all the ideas!

Stupid evil Chuck! Shame on you for talking!

Please keep your discussion going on this for the next day or two, and the Management Council will watch and see what you think-- and it may take a few days to review that discussion and decide on any action.

I don't really care so long as there is a spot to "shoot the spit". "Pilots" are not one dimensional. We have other interests and passions besides just airplanes and flight.

I do not cease to be amazed at how adults can whine about the private behavior of other adults when said adults are not forcing them to participate. Like porn: don't go there if you don't want to watch. :dunno:

Opt out, op in, don't care. Just leave the 'high school' rep points out.

Participation is one thing. Blind-siding with bi-polar non-sequiturs is quite another.

I've been tossing grenades with some of the folks here for near twenty years. In that time, through several forums, only about half a dozen have been true asses, and they're gone. I have "kissed and made up" more times than I can count. Trust me, this gang is really good once you sort out who's who. :blowingkisses::blowingkisses::blowingkisses: :):):)

edit: and the credit for that goes to some really skillful moderating. Thanks guys!
