Hi,

I am currently looking into getting my private pilot certificate. What steps do I need to take to determine whether or not I can qualify medically for pursuing this? For example, if I am taking a certain medication, what is the starting point for making sure I will be eligible?

Thanks!

For the most straight forward, down to earth, here's what you need to know, and if it's possible, here's what you need to do answer, email our most esteemed super-AME (cape and tights not required) Dr. Bruce Chien at [email protected].

If you check some of the other threads in this forum, you'll find he is the one that provides the best advice on how deal with FAA Medical and obtain a positive outcome if that's possible.

One course of action would be to consult an FAA-designated Aviation Medical Examiner. Call for a consultation appointment, and go over (but do not fill out or sign) an FAA medical application form with that AME. The AME should then be able to tell you if you have any history which would cause a problem. Armed with that foreknowledge, you can prepare yourself properly for a "real" FAA medical exam, or choose not to apply until your situation is resolved.

Since you mentioned medication:

Here is a site you can look at:
http://www.leftseat.com/medcat1.htm

The next question is, what do you do with that information? Consulting an AME is probably the next step. To get your license, you'll have to pass the FAA medical exam, that exam is administered by an AME. Once you start the exam you are stuck with it, good or bad. But, you can ask for a consult first.

We are fortunate to have the resources of a good AME who visits this board. AggieMike just gave you his info.

Ok, thank you everyone that responded! This is good information and I will check into it accordingly.
