Pardon me if you guys have already seen this.

but I still contend he either iced it up while scud running through the cloud layer trying to get to the scene of the previous crash, dropped down low to try to melt off the ice and either lost control or was so heavy he could not maintain level flight. The weather reports indicate it was ripe for building ice. That or he tragically miscalculated while buzzing up the valley and smacked the trees...

Godspeed Sparky.

Was he IFR? The cloud cover was pretty high (5500-6000 agl) so he could have been running around without touching ever cloud. No mention of freezing precip. I don't remember all the details, and this report doesn't say much about his flight path from takeoff, but it doesn't seem like he would have to have penetrated clouds. I do know that's a pretty hilly place to fly. I've been into Helena and Bozeman.

Any way you slice it, it sux.

Maybe ice,, maybe not. I was just trying to rationalize why a 20,000+ hour pilot would hit the top of 40 tall trees and cartwheel into a plowed farm field.. Any ideas?
