I have my own domain and created an email address for myself there.

I am getting overrun with Fatbusters, Home sales, Oprah Recommendations, Naked pics of Edfred, etc. It is getting to be like 100+ emails a day.

I don't do much w/ that email address but job hunt CB, Monster, Dice, etc

I got to thinking if I deleted the email address, they would start getting bounce backs and perhaps this would trigger an algorithm to report it as dead and it would stop. :dunno:

I can't really kill the email account yet because it is on versions of my resume and who knows when someone will find the copy w/ this email address.

1. Is it true that dead email account bounce back may trigger some senders to stop?

2. Could I fake a bounce back message and reply with it?

Thanks.

Setup a google email account. Forward email to there. Check your email there. Done. :-)

What email server are you running?

****, those were supposed to go to your wife.

It is a hosted solution.
I access it remotely w/ smartermail but at home, I use thunderbird to access it.

Basically, one of the ways to deal with SPAM is at the email server.

What options does your hosted email server provide wrt spam? Or is it just wide open to any traffic?

Ok, that hadn't even occurred to me.
I checked the server and the server filter was wide open.

I set it to "default spam settings" I will see how that works.
I had been trying to deal with it at the email client level.

I found a setting where it will add a flag to the subject based on % probability of being spam. I am going to let them all come through w/ these different labels added to see how accurate it is so I can decide what level is best.

Thank you.

Be careful with that. I have an untangle box which quarantines emails, and drops them if over a certain threshold, but on the email server itself, it was eating legit messages.

I have it appending "SPAM HIGH" "SPAM MED" "SPAM LOW" to the messages based on the server's guess that it is x percent spam

That way for now, I can get everything and then at some point decide to filter anything above x%

So far it is working. Last 2 emails came in HIGH

I might not mention that on your next IT job interview

I know, I know, I'm just kidding.

I had an interview yesterday and I caught them off guard with an answer.
They asked me something about organization.

I just go "Oh I am totally disorganized. I have to surround myself with structure otherwise I go all wheels off and that is never good"

The guy goes "Wow... I think that is the most honest thing I have ever heard in an interview"

I said "I am not here to lie to anyone." and went on to explain I am a creative type but I do a lot of structured things very successfully and I do that by implementing frameworks around the things I do then I babbled on about some PM methodologies or something.

Another 3 hour interview. Brutal.

I swore that said fireworks, which would have made the interview more awesome. Did you wear the tux?

And hear I was expecting to see some French Hawaiian recipe from this thread.

I've noticed that when I do a mouse-over of the "From" field, if it shows a different domain name than who the "From" field is displaying, it is pretty much guaranteed to be spam.

You can always set up a selective auto-reply system with the 550 error with either "Recipient not in route list." or "Unknown user".
I would google it, I am sure you are not the first one to attempt this.

I use TUFFMAIL for email. I just point my MX records to their servers. It works well, I can use IMAP for most of my devices and they have a half a dozen different WEB mail readers. They have very strong and configurable spam filters as well as all kinds of filtering bells and whistles. They've been really responsive for me.

Here is the story:

you create a [email protected] address only for your resumes.

you then, if you want to keep using the server, create a [email protected] email address for your regularstuff and then a [email protected] for everything else you have to do.

Every 12-18 months to delete the dontspambryan address and start using dontspammereally@clintonemail or [email protected] and just keep deleting the email addys that get used when the spam starts roling in - which is why you can keep log-ins as dontspambryan@ because you can log into your account there and simply change the send to email address . . . .

it sounds alot more complicated than it is. . . . . esp if you control the server. If I suspect someone is going to spam me I'll give them a nonworking email address. . . .

Another 3 hour interview. Brutal.

After anywhere from 15-25 depositions a year, [closer to 30 in some years - some multi-day] for 30 years this year, my BS filter is pretty finely honed. I can watch a guy walk in and 5 min later tell you if I"m gonna hire him or not. In that same 5 min we can order a sandwich and a beer and I can see if this gonna work at all. Also in that same 5 min tell you in a depo if i'm gonna need to rip a guy a new one or if he's gonna come around and just tell me the truth as s/he sees it. I've given up on tears as a defense. You wanna waste time - we'll start the chess clock, if you're gonna start crying you're paying for the reporters share of the time - we're doing business-related depos - I'm not asking you if your father loved you.

Who needs 3 hours? If I had a 3 hour interview I'd shoot someone - and thats not conducive to getting the job.

Just had another one 3.5 hours
It is actually interviewing with several different people for an hour each.

This one went really well. Looks like a good gig. I think if the offer looks good I will likely accept

After seeing the thread title I was expecting something like this:

-Egg and bacon

-Egg, sausage and bacon

-Egg and Spam

-Egg, bacon and Spam

-Egg, bacon, sausage and Spam

-Spam, bacon, sausage and Spam

-Spam, egg, Spam, Spam, bacon and Spam

-Spam, Spam, Spam, egg and Spam

-Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, baked beans, Spam, Spam, Spam and Spam

-Lobster Thermidor aux crevettes with a Mornay sauce, garnished with truffle pâté, brandy and a fried egg on top, and Spam.....

Spam makers Hormel, while never happy with the use of the word spam for junk email, have been supportive of Monty Python and their sketch. Hormel issued a special tin of Spam for the Broadway premiere of Eric Idle's Spamalot, a musical based on Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

The sketch is part of the company's Spam museum in Austin, Minnesota and also mentioned in Spam's on-can advertisements for the product's 70th anniversary in 2007 - although the date of the Python sketch was incorrectly stated to be 1971 instead of 1970.

In 2007 the Hormel company decided that such publicity was part of their corporate image, possibly for the better, and sponsored a game where their product is strongly associated with Monty Python, even featuring a product with "Stinky French Garlic" as part of the promotion of Spamalot.

Man I am sure showing my age....
