Hello,

The family is pondering a vacation for next week to the mid-Atlantic/Southeast area of the US. Other than DC we haven't really seen the area. We are looking for a leisurely driving vacation staying in a different place each night. It would be nice to experience scenery, beaches, historical sites, etc. The ladies I'm sure would like to stop at quaint towns for window shopping. The more we can be within view of the Ocean and/or scenery while driving the better. I should mention that the kids are teenagers.

Option 1: Fly to DC (all flying will be commercial) and then either go east to Delaware and then down the coast towards Virginia Beach or travel west of the bay and end up in Virginia Beach. If there is time maybe we can go to Kittyhawk.

Option 2: Fly to Raleigh and over to Kittyhawk and then work our way down the coast to Myrtle Beach.

Any suggestions from those who might be familiar with the area as to which trip might be better?

Mike You can fly into either IAD or BWI drive south of DC check out Fredericksburg VA ( some Civil War cites including sunken road) Then drive onto Williamsburg take in Historic Williamsburg, Stay at one of the resorts on the James River Then visit Yorktowne and james Town also near by and on the James River. Then head down to the vast miltary complex at Norfolk, Langley AFB, Ft. Eustis, NewPort News all of which are on the river and have some neat museums.

There is a lot of great history there.

The east coast of the Carolinas is quite nice. You could go to Kitty Hawk, Myrtle Beach, and Charleston depending on the length of your trip. Then you get your aviation, shopping and history :D

Thanks for the replies so far. We will probably have 4 or 5 full days.

I also hear Savanah GA is Da Bomb but know nothing about it. You can fly there D-> from PHL. I hear it is a great city. Art, Restaurants , Stores, Beach.

Its really nice between Kitty Hawk and and Charleston. Lost of beach activity and golf.

Savannah is interesting to look at the old mansions and the downtown area. However, there is not much else there to look at. It is surrounded by the ghetto. You would be better off to stay out on Tybee Island or Hilton Head and just visit Savannah for the day.

If you do make it to Savannah, check out the Eighth Air Force Museum

the Hunter AAF museum is an interesting stop if you're a military aviation history buff

depending on your schedule you might be able to get a ride on a steam powered train at the Roundhouse Railroad museum if trains are your thing
