Just moved into a new place in the city and my room has a sliding glass door that leads to a deck. Problem is, the interstate is about a block away and it is rather loud at night. Any tips and tricks to dampen outside noise? Think thick acoustic curtains will help?

Passive sound dampening is all about mass. Yes, curtains will help. Is there any way to have vegetation on the deck? Thicker/more panes of glass in the door will help.

Curtains...a little bit...but they would be more for changing the characteristics of the space in which they reside rather than attenuating noise transmitted from outside.

Bob is right...mass is your friend...

Another approach is to replace the door jambs or add window seals...

You could act like people who live near airports, and try to get the interstate closed!

Noise attenuation can get pretty complex. Depending on the acoustical properties of the surrounding area, and the house itself, hanging a barrier over a single set of glass pane doors may or may not help much. There are people out there with like doctorates and such that specialize in that kind of thing.
