I just discovered that one of my favorite old books is available now on iBooks -- Song of The Sky by Guy Murchie (1954). Murchie was a private pilot and later a transoceanic navigator in WW2. He writes of history, navigation, weather, aerodynamics and the soul of flight, all with a poet's touch.

Five bucks and several hours of reading, well spent.

I have an old hardcover copy that made the rounds here on POA and finally came back home.

Ive read it a couple of times. The end paper (inside the hard covers) shows the many different names of wind, and trending direction, fascinating stuff, making those pages worth finding in an older copy of the book if the newer ones don't have it.

I loved the illustrations on the end papers and throughout the book. Hope the new editions have them.

The iBooks edition has all of the illustrations from the body of the book, but only half of each endplate - western hemisphere of the magnetic variation map, and only the eastern hemisphere of that wonderful wind map.
