I offer to sell some new and USED RACING parts for air cooled VWs on a website. A guy contacts me about it, asks questions, asks for pics, etc. I send him a bunch of info, and he's in a big rush, rush, rush cause he as a race coming in 5 weeks, and he's tossed a rod through his block. Get it boxed, get it shipped, and here we go. Remember these are 40 year old USED RACING parts for an air cooled VW engine.

I get everything rushed out to him, I made a mistake on the crank throw, it was supposed to be 80mm and it was 78mm. I admitted the mistake when he micced it, and said he could send it back. This is the only thing that was brand new, forged steel, never been touched, made in the US about 7-8 years ago, prolly the only good crank left on the planet, and he's not happy, so I offer to take it back, and give him the money back.

Well, a few hours ago, he sends an email with a laundry list of problems. Cases are cut 10 over on the crank journal. No spit Sherlock, it's 46 years old! He's lucky I had it line bored, and cut 10 over! Well, that isn't good enough for him, even though the 10 over bearings are thicker, and hold up better, he's pouting about it. Next, the heads which I have about $1300 invested in machining aren't suitable. One fin got one crack in it during shipment, but all of a sudden it's got this problem and that problem, and another problem. His main concern is the meat between the valve seats. Well, he asked for the biggest valves he can get, and now he's whining about the lack of meat in the valve gap?! WTF is wrong with you? Did he think the guide bores were going to be moved apart? It's never been done. Next, I got a set of new Mahle pistons, pins, and rings. These were match weighed to within 1.5 grams, and he's complaining about the weight grinding. According to him, they should be ground this way, not that way. Sadly, I know he's wrong, but what can I say, it's racing stuff, and he can have any opinion he wants.

Says the crank is used, and it's never been installed, the rings aren't the right ones for the jugs(came as a package), the case savers aren't installed deep enough(they're perfect, I've done dozens they all work right), doesn't like the case cut for the sand seal in back because in a turbo they blow out. It's like this whiny be-otch can't be satisfied. Strange thing is, I discounted the whole thing as a package because he almost begged me to sell it to him. I know the parts will all work fine, and this is for RACING anyway. Like there's some kind of warrantee on stuff he hasn't even run yet! Like used case, heads, and new wear components for race applications should be returnable? I GAVE him a whole engine seal kit, 8 oversize pushrods and tubes, and some other bits for free with the deal.

Well, as much as it stuck in my craw, I just told him to box up everything and send it back, and I will send him his money less shipping.

Cheap whiny people suck. This guy will never live it down in the air cooled VW world. I hope he has to spend double what I gave my stuff away for. I absolutely don't ever want to hear from this male genitalia again. Gaaaahhhhhh!

With someone that whiny you might want to refund shipping too. He'll be back complaining about that next.

I'll bet he does start wailing about that too. I guess I'll give him back his shipping cost. He'll never be satisfied. Glad I don't have a blood pressure cuff on right now.

Welcome to my world!!:D I bet you knew when you shipped it that it was going to be a problem. These people give subtle little clues that I usually don't pick up on at first, then once the crap hits the fan, I look back and slap myself in the head for not listening to that little voice that said, DON'T DO IT!!:mad2::mad2:
Give the a hole his money back and be glad it's over.:D

Wish I had a $ for every time I've had to deal with whinny's like the one you have just encountered.

I've been in the Auto race parts and build business for 44 yrs...way back when, folk understood what they were buying, now many want 5 star parts for 1 star price ! :mad2:

And some just can't be pleased no matter how far you bend over backwards to try and help them... :dunno:

He asked if they were "044" heads. I said no, they are "041". He bought them anyway. He asked other questions that indicated he's built engines before, and knows something about it. The parts are what they are, and now it's time for him to haggle once he has all the stuff in hand. I'm betting he'll put in a paypal dispute right now, and want to keep all the parts too. What a douche. And I hate paypal while I'm at it.

I don't do Ebay and Paypal anymore, too many ****ats trying to scam you one way or another. And even if the deal goes through legit, Ebay and Paypal skim their fees off the top.

I get rid of stuff local via Craigslist. If nobody wants it, I donate or dumpster as appropriate.

I had to use paypal, he was in a big rush. The parts weren't listed on ebay, but the other option was a wire transfer, and I would have been happier with that.

And I hate to say it, but you'll be lucky if you get back the same stuff you shipped him. Too many try and return bad stuff. I can't remember the last time I sold anything on FleaBay.

Once again, not on ebay. He won't get a dime back until I get all the parts back and inventoried.

Sounds more like you won't be selling on eBay. They don't like deception, misrepresentations and combative sellers.

Sounds like a guy I sold some paintball stuff to awhile back. I'm extremely honest and very straightforward. I included all of the tools I had that came with it. Somehow, that translated to me keeping a complete tool set that I never had in the first place. Back and forth for days, he was just too stupid to deal with. He tried to pick apart my original sale thread to somehow say I was holding out parts on him. Nope. I'm glad he never left negative feedback. It makes me think he just wanted to whine. I'm sure if we met in person, things would have been a bit different.

He got a pretty good deal on the gun to begin with.

All of my other transactions were smooth and painless.

That's true, I won't be. Having nothing to do with deception or misrepresentation on my part.

Ebay is heavily biased towards the buyer. I gave it up, ain't worth the hassle.

Yeah... I feel your pain. I did stock cars for many years, dirt and pavement, all size tracks. I have met just the people you describe many times.

I just got the 'counter offer', after telling him I didn't ever want to hear from him again. What a putz. Guessing he's already installed some of the parts on his engine, or on my case, now it's time to negotiate.

This makes me mad and I'm just an observer here. "Counter offer", "negotiate"? So now that he has your parts hostage you have to negotiate?

F that. :mad2:

Be careful. This guy probably does this often and is expecting to get your parts and get a refund.

Well, I "have" his paypal money in an account, but we all know how safe that is. It's not even my paypal, I use a good friend who has a long time paypal account. Now I've drug him into this too, so we are going to get the parts before he gets any money. I have the signature receipts for the parts when they arrived, and also an email from him that says he got the stuff, just he wants to pay less now.

I think I'm going to get the stuff back, but we'll see.

Do you think he'll race with those parts before he finally sends them back?

Either the parts are useful, or they are not.

If they are not, the refund route makes sense.

If he just wants you to pay return shipping, that may be less clear. As you know, it can be a bit expensive to ship heads, especially for someone who doesn't have a regular FedEx/UPS account.

Ebay, Craigslist, it doesn't matter. They're all the same. Idiot Buyers waste your time and money especially when "leverage" can be obtained any time during an open transaction.

If you're not an online store, protect yourself by selling As is and list a disclaimer in your ads that protect you from everything a bogus buyer will throw at you. "As is" will scare off a few Buyers, but the transaction is over once the item is received.

I even say in my Ebay ads "IF YOU'RE NOT SURE OF WHAT I'M OFFERING OR WHAT YOU NEED, DO NOT BID BECAUSE I DON'T OFFER REFUNDS."

good think we have POA for the chosen few to whine about whining

Doc, keep in mind that if this funny guy files a complaint with PayPal, PayPal will do like other financial institutions by pulling the money away from you first, then ask you questions later.

While it's fresh in your memory, write down a narrative of events, including the details you've shared with us and more. Don't forget dates and times if you remember.

I have found that when PayPal or the credit card company does a "charge back" because of customer complaint, providing the narrative in clear factual language really helps my case and nearly always results in a ruling in my favor.

No, its not.

It's time to stop answering the guy. If you can't return all the parts in the same condition you got them my refund offer is off.

"I'm not a damn parts store - I sold you what I had and told you what it was. . . . "

I haven't answered any of his messages. Unless or until I get all the parts back in saleable condition, nothing happens.

Hmmmm. That is an interesting POV. I've taught biz ethics for several years, and this has never come up once.

I don't understand why you're so upset. I mean, if you can go bowling with the guy who just fired you and tell him to not worry about it, I just don't get why things like this would bother you. It's just business.

The terms of the sale were changed after both parties agreed to them. When I was fired(downsized, not for cause mind you) that was at an at will employer, in an at will employment state, and the terms of employment were well known to both sides. Also, the guy doing the firing was a nice enough chap, didn't make the decision, but had to implement them, and he was visibly upset with the process.

Both actions cost me some money. One was done ethically, the other - not so much. I could have just kept the buyers money, and told him to get bent. I'm not that way, so my escape is to come on here and kvetch at you folks.

Slightly off topic but has anyone sold anything on Amazon? My experience has been very positive, had a bunch of books that I was going to just give away but on a whim found that many were worth "real" money-- $10 to $45. Amazon takes a cut, about 15%, but it does reimburse you for shipping. It is very easy, you just list it, mark condition, get an email when somebody buys it and then you have 2 days to ship it and the money shows up in your bank account about 30 days later. So far I am a few hundred up on the deal and no problems (knock on wood).
