woke up to CAVU day, little breezy but no big deal. The mission was to go pick up a co-workers grand kids and take them for their first flight. They live closer to another airport than mine so I offered to fly over, about a 20 minute flight.

Anyway, on the trip over, it's a little bit worse than light chop. I warn them, I tell them that it smoothed out around 4,500' and I could slow the plane down to help, but I wasn't guaranteeing anything. They wanted to go. OK. My gut feeling is there's better days to take a 6 and 7 year old on their first flight but they insist.

We load up, :mad2: I can't get the plane hot started... :mad2: dead battery. So we de-plane and I go buy a battery charger. Kids are getting restless. Wait about 45 minutes for the battery to charge, I try a "new" hot start procedure. Fires right up.

We take off, kids are having a good time, loud and irritating each other, but they're happy. We get about 10 miles out. I hear "I'm airsick, barrrrrfffffff"... Nice. I've gone up to 5500 to try to get out of the bumps. Now I'm hearing "I want out!!!, get me out of here!!!" So I pull power and head that way. Now the other one is screaming and crying about his ears.... One wants out!!!!

We land, they deplane. Clean up the plane etc... I go through my newly learned hot start procedure, fires right up. I'm heading back home. As I lift off, the controls don't seem right....dammit left the autopilot in "TEST" mode.

Landed, had a beer because my flying was done for the day.

Yea, but you gave those kids their first flight. Awesome!!

Your day was better than mine also, I spent all day in the tail cone cleaning out 65 years of grime.

They said, and I quote.

"I hated it"

"I'm never getting in a plane again"

"I didn't have fun"

oh well. You can't win 'em all.

At least I got a new battery charger and a reason to clean the plane up.

I have more reasons, but that's the top 10.

A guy at the airport told me, he got it in the back of the head once.

Dickie Patton was my roommate during Sr. year college. He filled my jacket collar (the stand-up kind that was popular back in the day) from the back seat of the CAP Super Cub. Landing while that stuff trickles down your back and around your short ribs isn't a great time in your aviation career.
