Soft Comm C-60 Headset issue

My grandson is starting to take flying lessons and asked if I would give him a headset. I have a Soft Comm set that looks new but I haven't used it in years. I took it out of a flight bag and the mic on the boom looked as if it is leaking a brown oily feeling substance. I took it out and plugged it in and the mic is not transmitting. The earphones are loud and very good quality sound on receiving. I have not idea what this might be. Can I obtain a replacement mic at a reasonable price for this headset or is it toast?

The replacement mic cost more than the headset is worth. Trash it and get something else. If you want cheap but good David Clark H10-13.4.
If you want something nice for him I can hook you up with a nice used Lightspeed.
