I found a POA thread where our own soar master, Tony, mentioned the Perlan Project way back in 2009. Looks like they're getting closer... they plan to attempt a flight to 90,000' in 2013.

Their chief pilot, Einar Enevoldson, former Nasa SR-71 and U2 pilot, talked about the Perlan Project at the Commonwealth Club in SFO a couple weeks ago.
