I am now the proud 20% owner of a very nice 1978 172N. A mutual friend pointed me in the direction last week when she heard that a few shares were being sold. So I made contact, did a quick prebuy, fixed a few things, and signed my life away! She is equipped with the Air Plains 180HP & 2550lb STC, Flap Gap Seal STC, Long Range Tanks, single stack Aspen, GTN 650, Digital RPM, and a STEC-30. The current project this month is to install USB outlets during the IFR check. The long range project is going to be a JPI 900/930 with a new reman engine and throwing out the backup vacuum system for a G5 Backup. We’re hoping to keep the current engine flying for a bit longer. It’s currently at 2700 SMOH 5000 TT and going strong. However the last two 50hr oil changes started to have a small but steady increase in copper. So I think a bushing is on its way out.
Are there any pictures? Because... as they say.... Pics or it didn't happen.... Seriously, congrats! Sounds like a nice 172.
Nice! I'm sure you'll be glad you did. Well, right up until you see the bill for the new engine, but you already know it's coming...
The partnership has enough money in engine reserve to cover a reman engine. So right now we’re just seeing how much longer we can safely fly on the old. The longer we can the more toys we can put into the panel!
There is nothing quite like the first time you get a set of airplane keys that are supposed to go home with you. Congratulations. Most of the 172 time in my logbook is in a '78 N model that had the 180hp STC. I predict you will soon have zero interest in flying a 172 with less than 180hp ever again.
Congrats! Nice looking plane!! But 20%? That sounds sensibly affordable. Heck that's no way to adequately test the solvency of the family finances.
