Line Up and Wait
Twice a year I venture north to Cadillac, MI. One of FBOs there must be
nuts ... he rents ski planes in the winter and float planes in the summer.
Sadly; mid-Feb in northern Michigan this year, did not have enough snow
for ski ops. We had snow, but it was sparse with lots of grass ... and a bit
of drifting.
The Super Cub was sporting a set of tundra tires. My first reaction was,
"Wheels. Sigh. BTDT." Not!
Tundra tires are different. The moment of inertia is considerably greater
than std 8.00x8's. So, don't wheel land ... as the energy required to get
tundra tires spinning just might put the nose into the ground. Three-point
landings only, please. Full aft-stick always.
Then there is the matter of snow drifts. Very bad form to get only one
wheel in a drift; as that is the direction in which you will turn (ground
loop).
Always a good time when learning something new.
