S37 Smoketown
On Saturday August 12, Smoketown, S37, in Pennsylvania, will host our first ever "Fun fly in". For anyone who hasn't heard of the place, we are on the 155 radial of LRP, at 6 miles from LNS, Lancaster Airport, in South Central Pennsylvania. Rain date will be Sunday, August 13.

From 10 am to 6 pm, we will be selling food (hot dogs, burgers, ice cream etc) (bring your own chair though) and there will be other things for pilots to do as well. There will be flying skill contests, including flour bomb drops and spot landing, and there will be a seminar on Owner Maintenance by local DE Mike Kuhn. Also there will be an open house for Glick Aviation (Dennis Glick, whom some of you use for maintenance), Lancaster Aero Finishers (the local paint shop) and Sierra Interiors (who do excellent aircraft interior refurbishments). Come check these businesses out.

We hope to have a war bird and vintage aircraft contingent on the field, and there will be an area for re-enactors to set up tents, vehicles, aircraft etc. There are several warbirds based at the field, and we would love to have more come in.

Mel Glick (the airport owner) has about the lowest price av-gas around, and many people in the local area fuel up at S37.

This fly in is being organized by the pilots of Smoketown, to showcase the airport and to HAVE FUN! We look forward to seeing you all there. I would be personally delighted to see any POA folk. We haven't had a fly-in locally since the LOM Barbeque that I missed this year, and we haven't had you all over to Lancaster Co. since the "Great LNS fly-in".

Cool, Jim.

God willin' and the creek don't rise, I'll fly the R22 in.

Cool, the local DE in particular will be delighted to see you. He's a rotorhead.

   :D

Sorry. Couldn't resist. ;)

Seriously, wish I could make it. S37 is in my logbook thanks to Ed G and I must say, it's a nice little airport. Hope you get a good turnout and have a fun and safe day!

Y'all be careful. I hear there's something called an ADIZ over there somewhere. Apparantly its not easy to find, and sucks pilots in all the time, even when they've bought current charts and everything.

Too dangerous for me, that's for sure.

It's ok, because the nice men from something called the Transportation Safety Administration, or some such thing, are there to help you and assist you on your way out of this "ADIZ" thing... So I've been told anyway. LOL!

Having trained at Smoketown its an easy drive for me and one the car knows rather well. If at all possible I'll be there.

Ya'll be careful, now. Hayden "Jim" Shaeffer is back on the student pilot list. This is one terrifying guy. It is to him that we owe the 100 nm ADIZ training requirement, henceforth known as the "Hayden Shaeffer 100 nm training requirement". To this day he has not admitted any fault (as in "I screwed up) in the debacle that brought us closer to locking VFR out of american skies. It's always someone else.

Sigh.

Ok Bruce, enough about Hayden Shaeffer and the ADIZ incursion and Smoketown. Mr. Shaeffer is not part of the group working this fly-in. To the best of my knowledge he has not been active at S37 since the incursion, and I have not seen him training with anyone locally.

I would rather see everyone focus on the positive aspects of our fly-in. We are opening up businesses on the field for an open house atmosphere, we hope to have some warbirds/classics encamped, we have some fun training sessions and some fun flying games planned. AND FOOD.

Ya'll are welcome to come. I'll be either parking cars, or singing people up for the flying games, or assisting the guys running said games. I'll be on the ground all day, but some of us have to do that to make this work, and I'll get to watch planes all day! Hope it's not as hot here as it is right now!

Sorry Jim, I don't think I'll be able to make it that day. By the way how do you sing people up for those events?

Jim, whereas I understand your desire to be postive, I don't this this festering boil has been lanced. We will soon be treated to another bottom of the rungs pilot who blunders into interception, and the ADIZ will extend out to Harrisburg.

What this will do is to make VFR unavailable in the US, and given how IFR GA is treated as second after UAL/Delta/AA etc, this will essentially europeanize our skies.

Have you taken the ADIZ course yet? That's not going to fix these guys. H.S. now has an active Student Pilot Cert....

I'm not particularly pleased to see he has gotten back into the fray, either. But, he is no longer tied to S37, AFAIK. And remedial measures have been taken at S37 as well. I joined EAA 540 shortly after the ADIZ incursion and was there, and active, when we fully discussed what the ADIZ is, what it means, and how it works. I elected to try to be part of the solution, rather than a complainer about the problem. Not that I am accusing you of that, as I know that you have done plenty in the education department yourself, and I know of some of the many things that you do that benefit ALL of us. But I certainly see plenty of pilots locally who would rather complain about a problem like this than do something about it. And they pretty much don't belong to web boards like this one either.

I agree the training that the FAA is offering isn't going to solve the problem (I took the ADIZ course and printed my little card many months ago). We need to "stir all the way to the bottom of the pot" and get some of these guys who fly around the pattern every 3 months or so. They are the ones, both locally and nationally, who worry me. And I don't know how to effect that training. Then again, having watched pilots taxi out at a towered airport in violation of a hold short, with short final traffic, having watched pilots get stuck above an overcast w/o an IR, and beg for help to get down through, having witnessed "stupid pilot tricks" at 200 AGL, etc, I doubt that we can ever properly legislate against stupidity anyway.

But this posting is about something nice at Smoketown. It's been kinda a rough year there. The flight school moved it's main office over to LNS, leaving an empty desk out front. And the EAA 540 breakfast moved to LNS for the first time in many years, primarily as fall out over Mr. Schaeffer's ADIZ trip and pilot resistance to the group at S37. So we wanted to do something fun, to pull together the pilots who are on the field and active (and not so active) at S37. And I want to focus on that.

Let's deal with pilot education and ADIZ incursions on another posting please.
