Gander airport in Newfoundland for years was a major refueling point for flights over the North Atlantic. Unfortunately it was also the site of some major disasters, including the Dec. 12th, 1985 crash of the chartered plane, Arrow, returning members of the 101st airborne who had been on peacekeeping duties home for Xmas. The memorial site was constructed by the 9th Wing Canadian Forces Base Gander and is currently maintained by the City of Gander. Apparently the plane crashed due to the pilot's decision not to de-ice.

The second and third pictures are of the total crash site (the mowed grass area), the fourth is a close up of the memorial plaque which can be seen in the lower left of the third picture, the fifth is of a commerative statue which is supposed to symbolize the peacekeeping nature of their duties.

It was a very moving experience and there were several cars with US plates in the parking lot.
