Shuttle

Not the space traveling brand. I have heard of a "shuttle" used in lieu of a procedure turn, Pilot/ Controller glossary defines this as a racetrack pattern with two minute legs. When/why would this be used??

Racetracks are nice controlled way to lose altitude. I usually ask for 4nm legs or something appropriate to keep me within the protected zone. With the GPS, it's easier to do leg lengths than to do the timing, not that timing is difficult.
