Yeah, not that fast, not that sexy, but I still love the Hawkeye.

I felt bad for those guys and I flew h-46s, the least glamorous aviation job in the fleet.

All hassle of being on a carrier, none of the glory. The only thing worse was flying h-3s.

So did I.

I got a couple of landings in an H-46 ... no take-offs, tho! :) couple of hoist pickups (training only, fortunately)

I got so bored on one cruise that I finagled a crew swap with an ASW operator on an SH-3 ... made me really appreciate my mole seat in the Hummer tube!

Interesting statement. Were you Navy or Marine? All of my HSC friends who started in H-46s and transitioned to the -60s speak very highly of the phrog. Most of the guys that trash talk the -46s are young guys who started in 60s.

Personally, as an HCO, I have noted that HSC pilots in general seemed to enjoy life more back in the phrog days than they do now.

The best job had to be the Cod Drivers. Multi- engine turbo prop, government fuel card, permissive TDY, unlimited trips shoreside and no "real" supervision to speak of.

Unless you were attached to VRC 50 in NAS Cubi, during the VN era, no over night liberty, worked 12 on 12 off 365.
