No, this is not from the Onion.

A large pasty blimp with a scrotum is being deployed over the capital and points north soon. As a surveillance platform it can see as far as 340 miles. So, those north of DC, and all the way into NJ can look forward to juuuuuuuust a bit more Big Brother peeking down on you. From a scrotum tethered at 10,000'.

Oh - this is absolutely effing fine.

What happens to the to surveillance "pod" (sack) when it gets cold outside?

It retracts in to the body of the blimp where the air is warmer.

Welcome to the Land of the Free!!! Please wait in line to register your freedom so you and your freedom can be tracked wherever you are. Don't question it, it's for your safety.

I'm fine with radar tracking of all aircraft, but not vehicles - that is too much.

We've had these in our southwest border states for years. R-2309 on the Phoenix sectional for example. It's not a big deal, we just carry some Depends in the car so we don't leak on the seats when we're pulled over for a cavity search.

I have noticed my fillings getting warm when flying near one.:yikes:

The scrotum is perfect for the dicks running the show in DC. It doesn't show their good side, it shows their only side.

And when an airliner with 300 people aboard hits one of the tether cables crashes and kill all aboard the sh**'s gonna hit the fan.

Oh, it'll come with the appropriate 3 mile radius R-space around the cable, one more reduction in the NAS. I'm far, far more concerned what the imagery will be used for.

This sort of thing is William Howard Taft's fault. June 16th, 1909 was the beginning of the end of freedom in America.

Really? From the Fox article above-

The project's intended goal is to detect any low-flying missiles or enemy aircraft that might be headed to the capital, the report said.

How does one know what is and is not an "enemy aircraft"? Think we have problems with people flying into TFRs now... :mad2:

They may be for your own good, congress bears watching at all times.

Why is this a surprise to anyone?! We've had these tethered balloons off the gulf coast to look for drug smugglers for well more than 20 years!!! Look at old sectionals covering Texas through ft Walton beach. You will see a few of them back in the early 90's. My neighbor and my flight instructor pointed them out to me. Even though I was about 500 nm away at the time.

Not just the gulf coast. They stretch across the southern US too. Marfa TX, Deming NM, Ft Huachuca AZ, Yuma AZ

Anyone suppressed they stuck in a high traffic area with several large Class B airport near by. ?

Suppressed? No. Surprised? No. They'll be positioned inside a restricted area that's otherwise rarely traversed anyway.

I for one welcome our new anatomically-correct inflatable overlords...

Already a thread on this. These have been around for decades. They're in restricted areas so no civilian has a threat of hitting one. This isn't big brother looking at us, they're looking for radar threats in the area.

How do we know that?

When the populous fears the government it is Tyranny.
When the government fears the populous it is freedom.

It's radar, not some camera looking into your back yard. There's one in the Keys one in Arizona, used to be one near Perry, FL. They've been around for years.

I don't fear anything. This is a system to helps with security around D.C. I don't criticize the way security is provided in this country. A lousy aerostat in a restricted area has no bearing on how GA ops are conducted.

Can you reference the thread about the DC scroto-blimps?

A tethered balloon, in a high traffic area, at 10,000 - and no civilian is threatened with hitting one?

I realize I'm asking you to prove a negative, but if you have credible info - maybe from Fox News that there is a legal restriction on what they scroto-blimp looks for, I'd like to hear it. Frankly, I think your op-ed on what they are looking for is no better than the man on the street. I guess the NSA isn't looking through all our call logs, email, and texts either. It's for the children!

Tom-D already posted a thread called "Aerostats." someone posted the NPRM depicting the aerostat already in the existing restricted airspace. It will have no different impact civilian flight activity. As I said, this is nothing new. They've been around for years.

Is the sensor package on the DC one the same as the sensor packages on the 20 year old coastal/border ones?

No idea. I'm sure the old aerostats have been upgraded through the years as well. I have video footage of the one in the Keys and it looks exactly like the Aberdeen one.

I'm not saying this aerostat will by itself prevent intrusions either. We had them all over Afghanistan and still got hit by indirect fire on a daily basis. This is just one system in the chain that might detect something. Given the fact they won't affect the way we fly or even the way we live, I don't care about having them out there.

Those who will give up freedom for security deserve nether.

How do you know it is for the safety of the Capital?

Given that you are in the military I would expect your line of thinking... My question is.................... If all men are created equally as noted in our founding fathers works.... Why not put one up in EVERY city, town etc, for everyone's protection :dunno:,,,,, Why are the people in DC so friggin important..:dunno:

Forget it. This has nothing to do with giving up your freedoms and I'm not going to get into some conspiracy theorist commentary with you. I don't live my life in constant fear of what my govt is doing.

They don't work in Afghanistan so we will welcome them over DC, security theatre for our Kings. That is better then security theatre for soccer cows.

This is tailor made for a Godwin reference.

And I will provide it. I've got a very old letter. It's from a great grandfather, who was a pretty simple machinist in a small town outside of Aachen Germany. He was discussing the current political trends in his home country, and although my German isn't as good as it should be, some of the exact phrasing was used with respect to the new republic with the dynamic new leader. The new guy was shaking things up, putting things right, making the state work right again and gaining respect around the world. Of course, he'd taken the guns away from the citizens, and he had spies everywhere, and there was some trouble down south with some of the gypsies, but he told his kids and niece and nephew in WI that things would settle out soon.

Although he was close to the Belgian, and French borders, he was a hard-headed old bastard and he waited too long. He was rounded up with the rest of the Jews and was melted down in Ravensbruck. I'm guessing right up until the end, he believed that his country wasn't the problem, and that things would all be set right.

I don't live in fear. I have the ability to protect myself, just as the 5th Amendment provides for. I don't fear terrorists of any stripe, I don't fear any of the superpowers with the exception of my concern over China owning plenty of our debt. I do have a real, and well-founded fear of my own govt. The govt has put it's citizens in prison during war without benefit of trial. They've poisoned citizens with LSD, PCP, and other drugs. They've engaged in a willful process of sterilization without authorization. we've recently learned of a serious threat to our privacy of communication. Also, that the govt is politicizing the process of tax auditing. This is just the stuff I know about offhand, if I was really to get going I could come up with some other decent stuff.

Shame on you for not being diligent. Shame on you for taking the word of the 'crats like a bowl of pablum. Shame on you for what's to come.

Correct. Because I spent 20 yrs with a fraction of the freedoms that civilians have, makes me appreciate freedom even more. I also understand the steps necessary to try and protect U.S. citizens.

After 9/11 everyone was wondering why we didn't do something to stop it. Well now that agencies are taking steps to try and prevent a future attack, they don't like how those measures impact their "freedoms." So I ask, would you rather our govt be reactive to threats to the U.S., or would you rather them being proactive to threats?

All men are created equal but not all cities would have the devestating impact of a terrorist attack like D.C. would have. Think about where our nations military leaders are at. You don't want the head of the snake cut off if you can prevent it. That's just common sense.

This story is no different than last year when everyone was worried about 160th Avn doing urban ops in Miami. They've been doing urban ops long before this paranoia about the govt taking our guns existed. These guys exist to preserve our freedoms, if that takes a little tolerance on my part, so be it.

First off.....Thanks for your service...

Your well stated comments are spot on and tell the EXACT reason why 80% of the country does not trust anyone in DC...
