Hi All,
Please can someone advise me with regards to single engine aircraft hire in the Florida Keys,I currently hold a EASA PPL and also a validation letter from the FAA. I will be visiting the Keys on holiday and looking to hire a single engine for some flying time during my visit,is Marathon(KMTH) a possibilty? Any advise I would be most grateful for, many thanks,
Alastair.

I believe you will have good luck in Marathon, and it's been a while since I was at Island Aviation in Key West, but they used to have a couple of rentals, and occasionally there will be people who will privately rent who advertise on the bulletin board. Marathon though has (used to? Been a couple of years since I looked) several operators, some with warbirds that you can get instruction in up to an L-39 IIRC.

Have fun and don't forget to go diving. 95% of the beauty Florida, especially the Keys, has to offer is underwater.

Call/email the fbo there and ask. There will likely be a checkout flight with their cfi. The cockamamie TSA rules my require some sort of form. Worst case, you will be only able to fly with their cfi. looking an hour or two north might save significant $ on the rates.

I was into MHT a few months ago, don't believe I saw any rentals. Give them a call.

This year I'm doing the SNUBA thing out of Tilden's in Marathon but next year I plan to be PADI certified. I'm going with family some of them 1/2 my age and none of them will sign up to go. They just don't get what they are missing!

Skip the SNUBA, get certified this year. SNUBA is the most dangerous diving there is (which isn't that particularly dangerous anyway, but there is no safety advantage, and the restrictions are really annoying.) There is really only one thing to remember when diving with a single 80 on your back to keep you from getting killed: never hold your breath. Just keep your airway open, especially on ascent. If you run out of air on the bottom, you will be able to comfortably exhale all the way to the surface as the air expands. If you hold your breath, that expanding air will tear up your lungs and basically you drown in your own blood; so it's something to avoid doing. I tried an ESA (Emergency Swimming Ascent) from 280', worked as advertised.

If you can't find anything, give a shout and I'll hook you up with a rental out of Ft Lauderdale.
