Sarcasm

Green font can be used
One of the forums I frequent uses a green font to signify sarcasm.
What is this, 1980s WordPerfect? :dunno:

The original purpose of :) in text communications was to indicate sarcasm. No kidding, yes I'm old, and it goes back to online chats that pre-dated the Internet going commercial. Computer people would say "That's a brilliant idea. :) " when they were really pointing out to someone that what they were saying was ridiculous, and that the comment was intended as a joke - sarcasm. (Oh, and there was no cute picture. It was the characters : and ) side by side. We had ASCII, not this 8 bit unicode stuff...)

The article on smiley's posted above goes WAY back. I haven't seen a reference to usenet news in a long time. And the smiley is from around the same era. It was used at least as far back as 1984, being used with a chat program called "CB".

Well, the guy who posted it (me) goes way back too. Been on the Internet since 1993, before the web... Email, Usenet, Gopher, FTP, and all the text based things.

I couldn't find the original smilies message that got passed around to everyone back then... Or maybe it was redacted. I do remember the following entries:

Code:
8:-) User is a little girl
:-)-8 User is a big girl

Plenty of other jokes in there that weren't actually used, too.

There's an easy way with word, too. Just select all the text, 'copy', paste into notepad, select and copy again, then paste into a brand new word document.

It's been proven that the economic cost of fixing formatting issues with Word docs exceeds the GDP of Costa Rica.

If Dante had written The Inferno using MS Word, he would have added another level to hell.

All I did was try to move one of the figures up about 3 lines of text - and then... I think someone set of a bomb in the middle of my document.

I recall when the department secretary was giving a Wang Word Processor... After you got something typed, if it needed a correction, she would use white-out and put it in the typewriter..

Don't forget the Message of the Day (MOTD) that appeared when you logged in (command line). There were 2 different files of MOTDs. One for the general public and the other could possibly get you arrested.

Ah, for the days of alt.barney.die.die.die

I think any of the following colors could be deployed for sarcasm
