Hayward -- Hayward firefighters extricated a naked man early Saturday who was stuck in the chimney of his stepmother's residence in Hayward. After the man was freed and treated at a local hospital, he was arrested on suspicion of being under the influence of drugs, according to police.

Officers initially responded to a report by a Hayward resident on Gainesville Avenue who said she had heard muffled calls for help outside of her home over the course of several hours.

"We started walking around the neighborhood, and then we heard the cries for help," said Hayward police Lt. Gary Branson.

Police subsequently discovered a disconnected chimney spark arrester lying on its side on the roof at a residence on Cliffwood Ave. Once on the roof of the residence, officers located 23-year-old Michael Urbano wedged inside the chimney, according to Branson.

"(Urbano) told us that when he returned home from the bars he realized he was locked out so he tried to enter the home through the chimney," said Branson. "He then apparently disconnected the spark arrester on top of the chimney and attempted to shimmy down the chimney using a cable wire.''

The cable wire eventually broke, which sent Urbano free-falling down the smokestack. Shortly after 2:30 a.m., Urbano became stuck about three-quarters of the way down the chimney, and he remained there for approximately four hours before emergency units arrived.

Urbano told police that he removed his clothing because he thought he would be able to slide down the chimney more smoothly without them. His clothes were found at the bottom of the chimney, according to Branson.

Branson said it took Hayward firefighters one hour to remove Urbano. They had to go inside the home and push him up and out of the chimney, Branson said.

Urbano was taken to St. Rose Hospital and treated for scrapes and bruises. He was then booked at the Hayward City Jail on suspicion of being under the influence of drugs.
