It is from the 1942 test flight of the X-Wing fighter. It crashed while landing on the USS Long Island. This is a recently declassifed photo.

as noted, this is why in star wars they flew the X Wing in space and not over the Pacific Ocean, it just wasn't safe to land on a carrier...

Tsk! The problem is they DON'T have tailhooks ... which is why it's where it is in that picture!!

Why did they keep it classified for so long? I think the cat was out of the bag long before recently.
