Rock Polisher to sand/scuff a part?

I am replacing an interior piece inside my plane, I want to paint it the red I have painted all other handles, knobs, etc... It comes with a chrome finish. I've read to paint chrome you need to sand it well first, makes sense... However this is a tricky looking little do-hicky, not having a medium blasting gun to do it that way, could I put in my old rock polisher with some grit and let it roll around for a day or so????

Yes, it will work, but check it hourly.
The problem is it will also wear off parts you might not want worn down.
