Ringing in ears

For awhile yesterday afternon/evening, I was getting a very high-pitched "ringing" in my ears (actually sounding more like an old TV with a bad superheterodyne circuit). Never had it before, except right after exposure to very loud noise which was not the case yesterday. It's gone now, but it got me to thinking.

What causes this, and does this kind of occurance signify anything?

This could be anything. Viral inner ear irritation. Congestion irritating the inner ear. But it usually signifies nothing....provided it doesn't become often. :)

I'm the wrong kind of doc (PhD, not MD), but I traced ringing in my ears to an inadequate headset. ANC headsets are expensive but they are worth it!!
