Rethinking Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

How is this news?

What next, breaking news big pharma and street drug dealers are more concerned with profits than their clients.

Who knew lol!

My take from the three articles is more retro than revolutionary. Consider some of the findings that the researchers linked to lower ADHD rates:

  • Less time spent in front of screens.
  • More time spent being read to, singing, and playing.
  • More time spent in physical activities.
  • Less-indulgent child-care practices (letting babies cry themselves to sleep, etc.).
  • Firmer meal schedules.
  • Better food choices (less junk food, snacks, and processed foods).
  • Firmer expectations of behavior.
  • Stricter discipline, including the occasional spanking when called for.
It all sounds quite a bit like a typical American childhood from pre-colonial times up until about 40 or 50 years ago, before people started paying any attention to the self-proclaimed experts who claimed more understanding of child-rearing and child psychology than that derived from the collective wisdom of all prior generations of parents.

I have a relative with ADHD, early, twenties and the lack of attention span can be maddening at times. However, I will say this...seeing real ADHD and what most kids are diagnosed with as ADHD are two different animals. It is an overdiagnosed "Helicopter Parent" first world problem.

With all the emphasis parents put on planning your "college" and "athletic careers" from Pre-K through High School, along with all of the standardized testing...Gee I wonder why our kids are a little mental? Go figure!

Maybe I'm just beginning to get crotchety but...When did we become such over protective, bubble wrapped, nerf world, ninnies.
