Cleared for Takeoff
A while back I saw that there was a 3 Character N-Number with my first and last initials that was going to be "purged" and become available. The FAA Aircraft Registration website states that the N-Number will become available at 12:00 am central time the day following the purge date. I was waiting watching the clock and refreshing the website and as soon as the number was available I put in my request.
A few weeks later I get a letter that someone else got the number and I could get my $10 back or request a different number (I never bothered with either.)
Later I look and see that the N-Number I wanted was reserved by SHORT-N-NUMBERS. I'm guessing they have a bot that will beat out any human who tries to reserve a number that they are interested in reselling. I decided to look and see what registrants held the most 3 character or less N-numbers and found out that the SHORT-N-NUMBERS group is dominating the N-Number scalping business market by a long shot. There is also a USA N NUMBERS that appears to be doing the same thing.
This may already be known to most here, but I thought I would share my experience and the information I discovered. I'm just curious to see what everyone thinks about this.
