I'm in Tampa, FL and out of hours. How awful. :D So, I'll be here until Thursday morning.

Anyone know of any good places to rent? I saw a Cessna sign a few miles down the road at X39, but if there's any other places with more interesting birds, I'd go there.

Anyone want to hit Sharky's for lunch or dinner Wednesday?

I'm pretty sure that Florida Flight Training rents at Venice (KVNC) which is right by Sharkey's. Sarasota-Bradenton might be an option as well. I've been to Whitted and Tampa but I don't recall any rentals there.

Well, in trying to avoid driving the truck around too much, tomorrow I'm going to rent a G1000-equipped 182 at X39, which is only 6 miles from where I'm parked. I'll probably fly to SPG, VNC, EYW, OPF, or whatever I can get to in one day. Unfortunately, I can't get checked out today because they sent all the CFI's home due to crosswinds gusting to 25kt. :(

The G1000 182 is $160/hr. Forgot to ask about the instructor rate. They also require renter's insurance which I have been thinking about getting for these random times I actually rent. $265 from Avemco with $10k aircraft damage.

Jones Aviation at Sarasota rents Warrior, C172s, 172RG, 182RG, and a Diamond star. Several are IFR certified and one of the C172s is an R mod with IFR GPS.

Hmmm... Don't see the Star on their web page. Still there? G1000? If so, I'm afraid I'm gonna have to kick myself 'cuz I'd much rather fly a DA40 than a 182. However, it'll be nice to get some more G1000 time anyway.

Hmm I don't see it there eitehr. I never flew it but I am sur eit did not have the G1000. The C172 has a 430 that is new but for the most part their planes enjoy a classic avionic feel. But good rental rates, Fred is a great instructor, they are fair and resonable to do business with. I started flying witht them to just rent and ended up getting my commercial with them.

Look up Plant City Municipal. i learned to fly there. Dunno what they have in their fleet, but they are out I-4 a little ways, halfway to Lakeland.
You may want to see the EAA museum at LAL, or go to Kermit Week's Fantasy of Flight halfway to Orlando.

KZPH where Charlie Melot's engine shop resides is only 11 nm east of X39. Might be worth a visit if you're running out of places to fly.

There's a great idea.
I was based there te first 2 years I owned the Red Baron (aka the ugliest plane on the field).
Charlie has been known to give impromptu tours of the shop. /go up I-75 to Fla Hwy 52 first exit after the I-275 re-merge, then west to Zephyrhills. Turn right at the main light in town and then the second (?) left to the airport. Charlies (Zephyr engines) is the turnoff to the right just after crossing the RR tracks IIRC.

Or if you fly there (which is what I was thinking Kent might do), the shop is way back in the corner of the field past everything else. You'll probably see Jack's big motor coach parked on the other side of the taxiway that leads to the engine shop.

Seconding Jones. I flew with a CFI there before I got my pilots license so I could see the beautiful sights from the air, and that place was a class act! Great. Number is still in my cellphone: 941-355-8100
