Ok, so it's not a unique movement. However, the notice I received yesterday from AOPA touted renewing my membership for an additional year beyond my current expiration date, and save $24 plus get a lot of freebies/offers most of which I already have access.

If 525,000(estimated membership) of those were snail-mailed, even at a U.S. Postal bulk rate, that's probably an $80,000(estimated) cost. Is membership shrinking at a rate to warrant such a campaign?

that estimated membership number seems very high to me, but AOPA loves to spend money on mailings.

AOPA is embarking on a very agressive membership campaign with various aviation organizations.

from the AOPA website, their membership is:

"more than 400,000 pilots"

I have a related question. I think I joined last May. Not sure. If so, I should be getting a renewal notice (or - oh no - is it automatic?)

Question:

1. If I do not renew, or don't pay until I can, and my membership lapses, do I keep my logins / member number etc when I come back?

2. If I do not renew, do my other "products" go bad? Currently I have pilot life insurance with them for $4 per quarter (only 10K or 20K so my Mom doesn't have to pay for my coffin), and renters insurance for aircraft renters.

The whole gimmick here is to accrue funds before they need to be actually expended to create a temporary fund to rake a little interest off. Many organizations do it.

Nice thought. But I always carry as much fuel as I can.....my free cremation policy.

Your login (I presume you mean for the forums) goes away. The products you pay for will expire at the end of their term. I doubt you will be offered another year until you pay up your membership, which does auto-renew if you checked that box and supplied a method to pay for it. If you pay up in a timely manner, even after the expiration date, I suspect you get the same numbers and ids back.
Nick (skyhog) left for a couple of years if I remember correctly. I'd bet he got the same number back.

Where would they invest to earn any interest these days?

I let my AOPA membership lapse in 2011 due to being unemployed. They still send me unmarked envelopes and spam email telling me to renew.

I honestly didn't find their pilot training magazine to be that interesting, ditto about the features on their website.

Thanks, but I rarely go to the forums. The login is also used for their neato online safety courses, and print-outs (good for students).

I left for eight years and my membership card has my original membership number from 1991 and says I've been a member since then.
