The paper registration document had a carbon copy that was used as a temp until you received the
permanent card.

How do you deal with the downloaded form? Keep a duplicate?

Yep, just print out an extra copy.

I recently changed my N-number, and the new Certificate of Airworthiness was an e-mailed pdf with instructions to print it out and destroy the old one. Much more convenient than the old way.
