Registering a Transponder

If I want to swap out one transponder for another - same make, same model - what is the process of getting the new transponder associated with the aircraft?

Or, am I thinking this too much?

If you want to stick within the FARs, your avionics guy has to test it after the swap - even if it's the same transponder out/in. Transponders do not fall under the same rule as a rack mounted radio.

If you don't care about that and it's a plain old mode A/C transponder, nothing else is required.

Mode S or ADS-B out, then you have to program in the code for your airplane along with a bunch of other random stuff for ADS-B

It only takes a few minutes. Avionics shop will know what to do. Service manual has instructions.
