Reasonable Cirrus rate

Going rate here is $280-300/hour. Do you guys think this is reasonable? The next fastest thing is a 182T or RGs for around $165-180.
 
Which Cirrus are we talking about?
 
SR22 non turbo 81 gallon tanks.

Sounds like a G1 or a G2 SR22. I think that's an okay price.

I can't be sure because these days G3 and G5s are a lot more common. An SR20 G3/G5 goes for around $250/hr, an SR22 G3/G5 goes for around $330/hr. Given that your 22 is a bit older, it should be a bit cheaper than modern 22s, but still more expensive than the 20. So sounds like a fair price.

Cirrus' are always a lot more expensive to rent than other aircraft with similar capabilities. Never figured out why, might be the chute.

This. I rent a club 172 with the G1000 for $125 an hour wet ($100 if you were a student at the university that owns the plane). If we scale that up to a 182T G1000 I'd expect about $180 an hour or so. Why does the Cirrus merit another $100 per hour?
 
Seems about the right price. My flight school has 2 SR20's and 2 SR22 FIKI, which range from $219-$359

I guess it depends on how much the plane costs? If the 182T is newer, say 2000+ then I wouldnt think it would merit the extra cost aside from a higher fuel burn. If its an 80's or older model then I would suspect thats the issue as the Cirrus fleet is very new and the purchase price of a Cirrus can cost upwards of 800,000$. Im not sure if your renting anywhere close to that price point but thats how I see it though.

Perhaps a better question then is why do new Cirrus' cost $800,000? :p
 
My bet would be insurance cost of the Cirrus. Repairs are expensive.

Where are you? CA, MA, NY, etc are all more expensive than the rest of the country.

An SR22 here in WI goes for $258 (2003, steam gauges + MFD) or $273 (2005, full Avidyne glass).

IMO, SR22 rental rates are not worth it unless you want to go fast and a 172 is the only other thing you can rent. I think the rates are as steep as they are due to insurance as well as purchase price. Requirement to check 'em out here is either 500TT or 350TT + Instrument, and in both cases you need a 16-hour Cirrus transition course. That raises the price of the checkout to well over $5,000 - And that's to pay over $1.50/nm when most other planes are closer to $1/nm.

I'd pay $250/hr for a Turbo with Perspective and deice... But those are still causing depreciation pain to their buyers and likely aren't going that cheap. So, going back to the original subject line, IMO there is no such thing as a "reasonable Cirrus rate".

$300+ seems overpriced to me. But maybe that's normal in some places.

The SR22 burns 17gph iirc. So your 250 wet rate is low. I guess you could go 55% and get close by why if your renting the cirrus for speed?

FWIW, DA40's are only 10 knots slower and otherwise have similar characteristics to an SR20, but they tend to rent for around $160/hour.

Thirty minutes away in Leesburg, VA, you can get a 2010 SR20 for $175 wet or an SR22T w/ FIKI for $235 dry.

I would expect higher prices in Leesburg, but the place in Frederick is the only game in town.

That gives you a fuel burn rate of about 8gph, according to Cirrus' POH it burns 18.3gph. So expect at least $310/hr (that's if you don't include higher power settings in climb).

There's not even a place with a Cirrus to rent in the my area that I've found. One place used to have a DA40, but didn't get enough business from it so they sold it.

There was a sr20 in SoCal for 160 was all excited to finally fly it and it's out of service and was a lease back deal to the school and it's gone

There were two SR20's on Long Island for $179/hr wet for awhile, then the flight school went out of business. I enjoyed that deal for a bit.

That's insane! Even if you figure the instructor was worth $100/hr (I've flown with a national CFI of the year for less than that!), that still puts the SR20 at $300/hr, and there's plenty of SR22's that rent for less than that! :yikes:

Yep. But I guess it seems a bargain since 10 hours in an SR 22
will set you back $4995! Instructor rates are $70/hour.

It's a shame, I was really excited about finally having a rental cirrus nearby until I made that phone call. :(

Sounds cheap. A 172 here costs $135 for steam or $150 for G1000 but the school that has the G1000 version wants a 10 hour checkout and more checkout if you have not flown that specific airplane in the last 90 days.
