Feeling good about aviation today, so thought I'd propose a happy thread. What's something you love right now, big or small, aviation-related or not, that doesn't deserve its own thread but is worth sharing anyway?

I really loved the atmosphere today at Warrenton-Fauquier (KHWY). There were Young Eagles flights, skydiving ops, and a busy pattern with everything from a Stearman to a L-39 flying around. Everyone friendly, cheerful, and just enjoying a sunny day of aviation. What a privilege to be a part of that community!

I still love the feeling I had during/after my first solo (thirty-mumble) years ago.

I realize you are probably looking for something TODAY.

Hey man, if you're still loving it right now, it counts! And yes, there's still an echo of that "first solo" feeling whenever I take off. That moment when you line up and the runway stretches out in front of you? LOVE IT.

Literally busted clouds this morning for 30 minutes. Had no schedule, destination, plans, (paying) passengers - just enjoying being aloft with widely scattered puffballs to joust with.

today I'm oddly loving work. Specifically contract work.
Cuz normally when you're working for a company and you encounter problems, it's a headache.
But in contracting: encountering their problems = more money/opportunity for me.
So I don't mind when they dump a whole heap of work in my lap!

I’m building a chair. Queen Anne corner chair. Haven’t done woodworking like this in a spell now, and it’s raining so I can’t fly…

It’s for my girlfriends birthday in August… six years ago. Better late than never!!

I got a class date. That's had me in a pretty good mood all weekend.

like this kind of class date?

HAHA!!!!
We're cut from the same cloth.
I finished an outdoor kitchen I started 2.5 years ago.
I built most of it, installed all the components but never got to finishing the backside because well its in the back.
For 2 years, I have had a very functional outdoor grill, griddle, pizza oven, ice bin but the back has just been 2X4s and backer board.

Today I decided it was embarrassing that I haven't just knocked it out and wrapped up the project.

I love the satisfaction of completing a carpentry project.

Haven't finish one quite some time, but I love the satisfaction of completing a carpentry project.

Today's love is motorcycles being free in the local Express lanes!

I-66 is a cluster most mornings and afternoons, and sitting in that stop-and-go traffic in a stick-shift car makes me crazy. Trouble is, the Express lanes are wildly over-priced ($20+ each way) so there's no way I'm paying $200 to get to work and back each week. But motorcycle access is free, and I've got to say that sailing past stopped traffic at a consistent 80mph for the low price of absolutely nothing feels great! It cuts about 20-30 minutes off my commute, is much safer than riding in the weaving stop-start regular traffic, and is way more fun!

Any pictures? Occasionally I get overcome with the urge to try my hand at it, before I remember I have absolutely no artistic talent at all.

The giraffes are for a Noah’s Ark set I’m making for my grandkids. Patterns are in the book on the left, below. I’ve got maybe 8 pairs of animals/birds whittled, yet to paint.

The linking animals are from the book on the right.

BTW, if you do try it, use a proper carving blade. Modern pocket knives generally suck…you can get them shaving sharp (I have Woodworkers’ Pattern Baldness on my left forearm) but the bevel angle is way too large.

I modified my pocket knife (below) for whittling. It’s a stockman pattern, but I ground the Spey blade down to the detail blade on the right, thinned the sheep’s foot blade (it was almost twice as thick as the one on my grandpa’s 1950s-vintage knife), and reground the tip of the clip point on the left as an experiment…At this point I’m leaning towards re-regrinding it into something else, as it’s not really doing what I’d hoped. I also ground 20-degree bevels on all the blades (also the angle on my grandpa’s knife), which works quite well.
