I'm getting real tired of listening to your flying stories and it's only been 4 days since I've flown

BUT.. Having thought I closed the deal on a plane, I sold off my cherokee. My deal(s) fell through now flying weather is here and I don't have ANYTHING to fly. Sure I can to rent a C-150 to do T&Gs or an overpriced 172 that they'll bill me 4 hours min/day that is if they'll even let it go for more than a few hours. I can't find what I want and summer is here.

Should I?

A) I found a CHERRY Cessna 140, this thing is showroom quality. I'm thinking about just snatching it up, getting some T/W time in and then giving it to my wife (She wants a little T/W to dink around in) and having a fun, cheap plane do putt around the valley in.

B) We had some trips planned but they've all ben canceled due to no plane, I have a good mind to just snatch up an $18,000 1940's early 50's Bonanaza and fly the crap out of it this summer then fire sale it off late fall. But, how much could I possibly stand to lose on an 18K plane? Something like this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1949...764007?pt=Motors_Aircraft&hash=item3a773fa967 (No, I'm not telling where the 140 is :) ) Go naked on the hull insurance and build up some retract time.

C) Do I just not fly, miss out on the rest of the summer and hold out for that nice Bonanza with all the trimmings that I'm looking for?

You know your not going to be happy until you get what you want.

Neither of the other 2 options erase that, probably more of a chance that I do if I do A or B. I get to fly and take my time finding what I want, right now I just want a plane... I sat on my ass all weekend ****ed off that I sold my Cherokee. If I don't fly something soon, I know me, there'll be a couple of headsets on eBay and I'll be off to the next thing. I'm trying to be a good buyer but the sellers just won't let me be, spending my entire weekend to see a plane that the seller just blatantly LIED about isn't on my short list of things to do. Last !@#$%~! plane I looked at, "Yeah, it's in annual, has never been out" I drive my ass 4 hours one to go look at it. Check the logs... 2005 is the last entry.

Fast food or steak... You decide. ;)

yeah but, being at 10,500' @ 140knots is being at 10,500' @ 140 knots.

I go to the cattle baron once a year, the rest of the year, I eat ramen. The 140 is SWEET, given the cost of entry and the cost to own, I'd likely keep it forever and it's exactly what my wife wants.

The old Bo, I can buy it, knowing what it is, shave a few hundred bucks off my my insurance on the next plane and sell it in a week for 15K after I rack up a couple hundred hours on it (unless the market really tanks, in which case I'll be happy I bought an 18,000 plane and not a 75,000 plane).

Heh. I didn't say which one was fast food and which one was steak.

(Old trick to see if your real preference comes out in the reply. Same idea as Tom's... you have to buy what you really want... Or you'll just always be thinking about would'a-could'a-should'a...)

My real preference is to have a V35 that was used as a demonstration plane for Garmin's latest avionics with a fresh engine, paint and leather interior show up at my hangar tomorrow for 50K :D

Bart, you're facing the same "all the good ones are gone or overpriced" problem that I face numerous times each year, and as recently as last week in the Citation Excel market.

The bad news is that it's no fun while it's happening, the good news is that you become a better judge of horseflesh and a more astute buyer as you look at more planes and listen to more stories.

Even better news is that airplanes continue to show up on the market, although not as quickly or sytematically as you would prefer, and the right one will materialize soon. Stop-gap measures seldom work out satisfactorially and junk is still junk. The best strategy is to continue to refine your want/need list and be patient but ready to jump on the right deal when it appears. Paying a few grand more for a good one is a much better option than paying a few grand less for a pooch.

I'd grab that Cessna 140 to fly around with NOW, and then get what you want when it comes available.

Or, you can just go do some shooting! :D

You need to buy an RV so you can do overhead breaks. ;)

Eggzactly. In the past couple of weeks, I've found 3 that looked like "the one", fresh on the market in the last week or two. Call 'em up "SOLD!"

Good stuff priced right seems to be moving like hot cakes, junk sits.

Get the 140 for local and get the Baron I showed you for traveling. You buy both for the price of a good Bo with cash left over for fuel.

There's a sweet Baron on BT for sale and priced right. For only me and my wife, I can't see feeding 23GPH to a plane to go the same speed just to haul around more air. I don't think I can care for and feed a twin.

No, you use 23gph for an extra 20kts, slow down to like speeds using the red handle and you spend an extra $7.50 hr to have twin engine redundancy. Now you have 2 470s running 55% power loafing in cruise rather than pushing one hard, plus you will never have to worry about DA. On top of that, with 520hp and you and your wife you're off in 900' and once you get good in it a 1200' strip will get you in and stopped. There is no replacement fot horsepower. If you can find a turbo normalized a travelair, you get the best of the best. I had one for over a decade, great machine that cost less to operate than a Bo and faster than a Bo or Baron above 12,500'. They are kinda rare, but there's a few around, tough ones to wait on though
