What makes R22 worse than the "accepted" refrigerants? Why is R22 a pariah? Why are we phasing it out but it's global usage is increasing? Why do I have to sell a kidney to get it in this country???

Personally, I believe the conspiracy theory. It goes like this. Dow invented and patented R-22 and made a lot of money off of it. The end of the patent life coincided with the mounting pressure to come up with a more enviornmentally friendly substitute. Dow supported the pressure because they saw the cash cow disappearing and the opportunity to patent a substitute that could be sold for a lot more. Meanwhile, as soon as the patent expired, many 3rd world countries started making unlicensed R-22 dirt cheap. They can't sell them in the 1st world but they can in the 3rd world.

Just a theory. Just an opinion.

You do need a license to buy it, but it is still expensive as they are phasing it out. One of the easiest ways to get it is Craigslist about $200 for 30lbs.

As to why?

So the use a less-efficient refrigerant in an air-conditioner or refrigerator designed for the more efficient one, it runs constantly trying to keep up, and winds up burning more energy in the process, which increases its "carbon footprint."

Yes, there is a tradeoff, as in almost all engineering.

A big part of it is that Montreal was more than a decade before Kyoto.

Another part is that ozone depletion is catalyzed and quite a bit more immediate.

I have much more experience with R-12 than R-22, but I've seen a whole lot of incorrect retrofits, largely by presuming fill volume is the same. A correct R-22 retrofit to R-134a should run at a somewhat lower high side pressure, and should never run continuously unless it is undercharged or the expansion valve is broken or incorrect.
