A few years ago there was a backyard RC toy someone built for fun that could hover like that and navigate around on it's own via gyros and GPS or be guided by a generic RC controller. Put that in a ball so it's crash proof and it's pretty close to the same thing.

RC has come along way. A friend of mine has a quad-copter that is 100% autonomous.
