I was just wondering if you were trained to be an airline pilot by an airline, would the airline pay YOU to train to be an airline pilot? Sorta like on the job training?

Depends on the airline. Lufthansa used to pay a stipend for their cadets to live on.

No US airline currently pays pilots while they train to get up to the ATP. A few require a Type rating (Southwest requires a 737 type prior to starting training). Virtually every airline pays pilots while attending the airlines training program. The question is how much. Often times it's just enough to cover basic expenses.

Unless the airlines could prove that the training is strictly for your benefit, and you do NO work for the airline, then they would be required by the DOL to pay at least minimum wage. Otherwise it would be a violation of both State and Federal Wage & Hour laws.

In the US the question is moot, the airlines don't provide ab initio training. Other countries it's different, they run Cadet programs, some of them pay a stipend, some of them require payment.

Yeah I thought that there is not airline ab initio training in the U.S. except some countries abroad.

But what about the Delta Connection Academy? Are they a flight academy run by Delta Airlines or its subsidiary Delta Connection?

Subsidiary and expensive, not sure what their minimums are anymore or if they have one. I'm sure if they do ab initio you'll be into it for $100k.

You really dont want to try to turn the US airsystem into what Europe has.

As far as I know they no longer have any connection (no pun intended) to Delta or any Delta subsidiary.

When you're hired by one and you're in their initial training program you most certainly are getting paid.

I think they still do. They also have their own decently sized runway and their own private ILS.

They still pay a stipend, but it accrues to an account, together with all training expenses up to the first type rating. If LH or one of their subsidiaries picks you up, the balance is forgiven over a period of years (pretty short, 5 years or so). If you hire on with their competition, you owe the balance and a fixed interest repayable over a number of years (a bit longer iirc.).

In the olden days, they paid you a salary for the 2 years it took to go from zero to right seat in a 737. If you left after finishing training, no money was owed. But back then, nobody ever was nuts enough to leave right after training. LH was pretty much a highly paid goverment job with a pre-determined career path. If they hired you for training, you knew you could retire as a wide-body captain with a good pension at age 55. Good work if you can get it.
