I went to the ER for chest pain recently; they determined it was not a heart attack but referred me to see a cardiologist for follow up. He ordered an echocardiogram and stress test. The report from the echo said "Fibrocalcific disease of the aortic valve without stenosis" and "Minimal mitral valve calcification," but the cardiologist said at my age (late 40's) this isn't a concern and told me the echo was fine and that I shouldn't be concerned.

I fear though that this will now require a special issuance from the FAA with my next medical -- is this the case? If so, what documentation will I need to prepare? Thank you so much for your expertise.

FAA will regard aortic calcification as a marker for atherosclerotic disease in general. This is the same situation as a pilot "talked into" a little noninvasive coronary CT calcium scan.

I would obtain a stress treadmill echo (CPT 93350 or 93351) to nine minutes duration and to 90% of (220-YourAge) for peak heart rate. If you appeared in the office with both I would be inclined to issue you and defend the issuance and it would most likely, be successful.

A stress run and a seated echo are NOT the same thing. Tell you docs that the CPT for what you wnat is either 93350 or 93351 with the stress run.
