i am a new pilot. i passed my check ride dec of 2024. i had a 3rd class medical, while i still had my 3rd class medical i also got basic med (a suggestion from my DPE. we are both around the same age). when i went in to renew my 3rd class medical in march of this year i was denied because of high blood sugar. am i to understand that i am covered under my basic med even with the denial?

Unfortunately, I believe that means you're no longer valid for either basic med or sport pilot. You'll need to get a class 3 med in order to operate under either at this point.

I'm sure someone will confirm, but pretty sure that's the case.

OP is grounded.

Pilots must meet specific conditions to operate under BasicMed. Among other things, they must have held a valid medical certificate at some point after July 14, 2006; the most recent medical certificate cannot have been denied, revoked, or suspended; they must complete a medical exam by a state-licensed physician; they must complete an online medical education course; and they must hold a valid U.S. driver’s license.

Go get the SI, let it expire, and never see an AME again unless you’re complying with SI.

Why did you bother renewing your class III if you were covered by basicmed? The whole point of basicmed is that you can let your class III expire and keep flying, eliminating the risk of being denied. Now that your medical has been denied you can't fly until you get a special issuance.

Get treated, get it down and then get the Oral Meds Status report filled out and signed. Pay attention to the HBA1c requrement hiding under line 3. Fax it to the agency @ 405-954-4040. If it does not require treatment with meds, get your doc instead to write, "Diabetes controlled by Diet and Exercise, signature, date".
